On Saturday February 15, 2019, reports said gunmen abducted about 287 students of Saint Augustine’s College Nso, on the outskirts of the town of Kumbo in Cameroon’s restive English-speaking North West Region. We are yet to independently authenticate the figures.
The kidnapping, reminiscent of the 2014 abduction of 276 school girls in Chibok, Nigeria which brought Boko Haram into global consciousness, is only the latest indication of how volatile the Anglophone conflict has become since it erupted in 2016.
Saturday’s kidnappings also carry particular echoes of the most infamous abductions in the history of the Anglophone crisis — the 78 students and about four members of staff taken on November 5, 2018 from Presbyterian Secondary School (PSS) Nkwen, Bamenda.
The about 287 students, as well as the school’s principal – Father Polycarp Sallo Wirba, two security guards and others, were whisked off to an unknown location after an early morning attack on the school, The SUN learnt.
We learnt that the abductees were freed late on Sunday evening after they were forced to sing the Ambazonia anthem.
“No ransom was paid for their release. I hear they asked only petrol for their bikes to go back. But they asked the students to sing the amba anthem which they did so well… Their problem is that school is ongoing while others are deprived. I hear they want the school closed,” a source told The SUN.
Mark Bareta, one of the most active separatist bloggers, condemned the abductions and acts of violence against the innocent students.
In a release calling for the release of the abductees, Bareta wrote: “I am worried because I am beginning to feel it is a type of racketeering with actors from both sides of the divide including school administrators. I am saying so because if the reasons of any one abducting students is to stop them from going to school as still being part of the struggle, then the schools operating should have been made to shut down completely. But when we see students taken, and they are released to go back to the school and the schools continue to function, then this is no longer an issue about the school violating the struggle, it’s all about business and racketeering and there are people benefiting from this shameful act.”
He adds that: “We have repeatedly maintained on this platform that schools can operate so long as it is safe to do so and students’ security is not jeopardized. We have maintained that the period of active school boycott was over as the struggle has morphed into an arm struggle.”
Tapang Ivo Tanku, spokesman of the Ambazonia Governing Council, whose armed wing is the Ambazonia Defence Forces (ADF)— one of the most active separatist groups, condemned the abduction, but failed to claim responsibility for the act. He however did not accuse any armed group for the abduction.
The number kidnapped from the school, if confirmed to be 287 or more, is so far the highest taken from a school since the beginning of the Anglophone crisis.
At the time of filing this report, parents and relatives of those kidnapped had gathered at the school premises to reunite with their children.
The recent abduction follows similar attacks as Anglophone fighters struggle to enforce a school lockdown across the north-west and south-west regions of Cameroon.
The Anglophone crisis began about three years ago when English-speaking teachers and lawyers went on strike demanding fair working conditions in the country’s North West and South West Regions. They claimed their language and culture was being marginalized by French-speaking legislators and the government of President Paul Biya. But after the government responded with force to some protests, things have since escalated over the last year to become a full-scale conflict between armed separatists and the Cameroonian army.
Many analysts wonder why hospitals, schools and other public structures at risk of attack have since not had the necessary government security cover.

Following the ongoing lock down in the North West and South West Regions of the country, inhabitants of these towns have been obliged to stay indoors fearing the unknown.
In some parts of the NW region, staying at home within these days seems more dreadful. In Bali, many people have fled their houses for the bushes as a result of constant clashes by separatist fighters and the military that have left everywhere in chaos. These clashes in most cases have resulted to the burning of houses and looting of property.
Within the week, at least 20 houses were set ablaze in different quarters in Bali. Inhabitants told this reporter that some of the houses were razed down by people dressed in military uniforms. “I peeped from a distance; they parked their truck, broke open the house. After taking some items, they set the house on fire. I could only notice they wore military attires”. An onlooker narrated.
In Wosing quarter, Bali, not only houses were razed down but provision stores too. Our source told us that, items from these stores were looted before the stores were set on fire. In another area, The SUN gathered that the military attacked a house and made away with gas bottles, money and other valuables. “Our house was attacked; they took all our gas bottles. They even turned off the gas plate and disconnected our gas bottle while we had a pot on the fire. Our phones and other valuables were taken. It was really terrifying”.

Remnants of a burnt house
Remnants of a burnt house

In another quarter in Bali, Nahka, residuals were told to leave their houses and run for their lives. This pushed many of them to seek refuge in nearby bushes. “We were told not to sleep in our houses. I left alongside my children for the bush leaving behind my bedridden father. The thought of leaving my father all alone pushed me to head back home not minding the consequences. As we got home, shootings aggravated but we only had to count on God for safety” a residual of the area said.
In Boh-Etoma, another quarter in Bali, several houses were equally reduced to ashes by unidentified gunmen. Residuals of the quarter were driven to a state of panic and confusion causing some of them to flee the area for safer heavens. “The situation is terrible. We are suffering. We don’t know what the days ahead will look like. We need intervention” a residual hinted.
As the lockdown continues in the North West Region, people have continued to beg for its discontinuance. This as a majority of them could not stock their houses with foodstuffs due to insufficient finances. The lock down has also been a major hindrance for people to access health facilities thus resulting to health complications in some cases and in others death.

Territorial Administration Minister, Paul Atanga Nji has told Governors that the protection of persons and property must be absolute priority in the ten regions. Speaking last February 14 and 15, 2019 while chairing the first bi-annual conference of governors at the conference hall of the Yaounde City Council, the Minister stressed that “the protection of persons and property must be done with courage, determination and serenity.”
Holding on the theme “administrative authorities: strengthening the security of persons and property, “ the conference enabled Minister Atanga Nji to hand down firm instructions for immediate execution to governors upon their return to their regions.
While calling on governors to make use of Forces of Law and Order put at their disposal, the Territorial Administration boss asked them to seek for collaboration with the local population in the search for peace in the country.

“Faced with different acts of provocation, destabilization threats, the government will make sure that the law prevails as we will not tolerate any anarchy.” He reiterated.
To those who think government is bowing to insecurity and destabilization threats, the Minister reassured that “government still has the means and power to overcome whatever situation.
The two days gathering marked by the award of May 20 medals to three senior officials who distinguished themselves through hard work equally featured a joint statement from the Delegate General for National Security and Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defense in charge of the National Gendarmerie on “assigned duties of Forces of Law and Order in relation to the safety of persons and property, “ statement from the Minister of Public Works on  “support measures to contractors and road maintenance follow up teams, “ statement from the Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reforms on “evaluation of the functioning of the disciplinary regional councils,” and administrative and socio-economic reports from the governors.

A source who spoke on grounds of anonymity said: “Two of us were their target. Who sent them is the question to be answered by state authorities.
“They entered the village, went straight to Wonya Lifofa compound up the hill, and surrendered my uncle, Peter Love, all my cousins, nephews including my mother while surrounding my house armed to the teeth.
“They left later and attacked Mbonde and assassinated him. Who is this monster that wants the blood of Mokunda people using the Anglophone crisis?“ the source questioned.

Following the sociopolitical crises plaguing the North West region of Cameroon, it has been challenging for the waste management company, HYSACAM to properly dispose of waste. This as, they have been subject to threats or attacks from separatist fighters.
Recently, one of their garbage collecting trucks was set ablaze and one of their workers was injured. To this effect, HYSACAM is faced with the difficulty of clearing waste off the streets of Bamenda. For more than a month, HYSACAM has been off the streets of Bamenda. This has left garbage heaps in most parts of the town. The stench produced from this piled dirt is unavoidably choking.
On Friday February 15, some military officers began clearing garbage off the streets of Bamenda. They were working under the instructions of General Agha Robinson Ndong, Commander of newly created 5th military region.

It was a great relief for the population around Bamenda food market when military officers began clearing the heaps of dirt that had been piled in front of their business places “we are happy that finally the garbage heaps are being cleared. It is of great relief to us. The smell from the dirt alone could cause a miscarriage,“ Madam Lum, a trader at Bamenda Food Market said. Many other traders expressed their satisfaction to see the military carrying out a humanitarian act. To them, the military should do more of such acts “we are very happy. In fact of the military can continue doing things like this, we will stand by them. The dirt was really much and it is quite relieving to have it cleared. At least we now have space to display our items. We are grateful and we really thank the military.”

A senior warrant officer, Taku Paul Buifor explained to the press the reason for the clearing of the garbage “The hierarchy of the military in the North West Region has deemed it necessary to carry out this humanitarian act because the prevailing situation has caused so many public disorders. Dumping garbage and the population cannot carry out their activities freely. So the hierarchy has decided to send the soldiers to go and free the garbage so that it will permit the population to carry out their activities freely and to gain more confidence in the military.” When asked if the military was coming in to replace HYSACAM, he gave this response “we are not here to replace HYSACAM. With the prevailing situation, we cannot allow the population to be suffering.”
It should be recalled that HYSACAM is a private owned company and was contracted by the Bamenda City council to manage waste in the town. They had been carrying out their duties effectively till the crisis in the region aggravated.

Limbe joined other parts of the country to celebrate the 53 edition of National Youth Day baptized ”Youth, Great opportunities and participation in the building of a peaceful, stable and Emergent Cameroon”.
The ceremony suffered a low turnout from the entire Limbe population at the Manga William avenue ceremonial ground. Although the ceremony took midst tight security deployment following earlier rumor of threat from separatist to disturb the occasion kept most Limbe City dwellers indoors for the fear of the unknown.
The population decided to scare away, leaving the grand stand below capacity, as well as the absent of onlookers to cheer the marchers, as it was the spirit back in the days before the advent of the crisis, which rocking the North West and South West Regions for over three years now.
It should be noted that, what kept most Limbe City dwellers indoors is due to the operation 10 day lockdown policy initiated by the interim government of the separatists fighters. Prelude to the Youth Day celebration, the SUN learned from a reliable source that,
Several youths involved in bike riding and motorcycles were arrested for joining separatist fighters to cause commotion on Thursday February 7 at Karata Junction Limbe II subdivision and were later freed.

At least six nursery schools, 8 primary schools seven secondary and high schools, one vocational training schools and Cameroon Youth Council, CNYC and the scout were all part of the civilian march pass. The ceremony was animated by the Limbe Municipal ban players. I
It should be noted that grandeur of the celebration was not felt as it used to be, the ceremony which started at 10:28 am ended at 10:51am.
The event was presided by the SDO for Fako Engamba Emmanuel Ledoux. The Youth Day parade was watched among other by Hon. Gladys Etombi, Member of Parliament for Fako East; Motanga Andrew Monjimba, Government Delegate to the Limbe City Council, along with mayors and Divisional officers in Limbe.
The Youth Day celebration in Limbe was very timid and scanty. The lone political party that participated in the march-past was the ruling CPDM.

On February 11, 2019, a day celebrated all over the national territory as Youth Day, inhabitants of Bamenda woke up to embrace a lockdown of activities that had been on from Monday February 5.
At about 9:00am, one expected to see students and teachers flooding the Bamenda Commercial Avenue to fulfill their civic responsibility. This was however not the case as only a few youths could brave the odds and make it to the grandstand. Some administrative officials including divisional delegates were spotted at the grandstand. Some attendees could be seen sneaking in with sacks and motors bags containing party regalia which they later wore to take part in the march-past.
The march-past proper that started at about 11:00am did not last 20 minutes. Representing secondary schools in Bamenda was GBHS Bamendakwe that had eight students march-past the Bamenda Commercial Avenue Grandstand. Less than one hundred students marched under the University of Bamenda and dozens of others marched under professional institutions. No name of a professional institution was displayed on the board the students marching pass held.
There were a handful of students marching under CENAJES, a youth and sports training institution, and few others marched under vocational training institutions. A few delegations equally took part in the march-past with a handful of participants. The lone political party that was represented at the march-past exercise was the ruling CPDM Party. No primary school pupil was present at the grandstand.

Speaking shortly after the march-past, the Governor of the North West Region Adolphe Lele Lafrique called on the youths to make use of the many opportunities given to them and actively participate in nation building. He equally encouraged them to get registered on electoral lists and participate in the upcoming municipal elections. He also asked the youths to be law abiding citizens.
“I want to ask them [the youth] to be law abiding citizens, not to heed to those that are asking them to destroy our beloved country.“
The Government Delegate to the Bamenda City Council, Vincent Nji Ndumu who was equally present at the ceremonial ground, called on the population to brave the challenges they are facing.
“I use this opportunity to call on the population of Bamenda and in general the North West and South West to take their destinies into their own hands. We cannot continue in this vein. It will not take us to anywhere. This is just a misadventure and inevitably within the days, weeks, months ahead, this thing will come to an end. Let’s take our destinies into our hands.“
The ceremony however ended hitch-free as necessary security measures were taken. Unlike previous years where youths were excited to stroll around after a march-past, the case was different this year. Most youths present hurried to have a change of clothes before being transported back to their various destinations. Business places still remained locked and streets deserted.

When he was arrested by Ambazonian forces on his way back from Bamenda through Yang village between Njinikom and Fundong sub divisions in June 2018, many thought that was the end of his life, as has been the case with almost all uniform men abducted by Ambazonian activists since the escalation of the Anglophone crisis in the North West and South West regions of The Republic of Cameroon. However, Bemsi, a police officer in Fundong’s case was different, indeed different.
Bemsi was abducted and taken to a camp on his way back home to Fundong, during which he was carefully questioned and an investigation well carried out by the level headed Yang camp Amba fighters who treat the population much better as compared to the FundongAbuh camp fighters. When nothing was seen against him, they released him without any physical torture, though after the payment of a reasonable ransom.
However, the FundongAbuh camp seems to have recruited fighters who are totally not versed with their own environment and the people therein. Five junior fighters of the AbuhFundong camp on Thursday February 14, 2019 invaded the residence of Police officer Bemsi in Fundong at about 6:30pm and ordered him to follow them after asking him to hand them his gun which he said he hadn’t a gun. “They came in and asked me what I did for a living and I told them I was a police officer, then they exclaimed ‘aaarrh you be Ikelebe! So nawuna di shoot we killam? We go kill you today. After saying this they went into the rooms and scattered everywhere asking me to hand them my gun. I told them for my 25 years in the Police Force I have never needed a gun”. He said.
“They came out and picked up my woofer and asked for the keys of my bike, then they carried my generator and tied with other things which they collected from my house on the bike and they asked me to follow them. I tried to plead with them to go ahead with the things so I can follow them the next day, but they bullied me to stand up immediately. I asked if I could put on my shoes and they said no. They collected my uniforms and said they will dress me in one and kill me. We left and they flogged me from my house till we reached their camp in Ngwah. While one was going ahead with my bike and gadgets collected from my house, I was made to move on foot and forced to run even when I was tired such that my slippers slipped out and I hit my toe very hard on a stone injuring it badly. Even with this I was not pitied. They flogged me on my arms and back with whatever they lay hands on. Even my head was not safe from the whips.” He narrated on
“It was when we reached Ngwah that one of the “colonels” who knows me asked them not to touch me any further. He told me he knew me very well though I do not know him and said I was going to be made to sleep in a very uncomfortable situation and ordered my abductors to take me to the camp on a bike. I was taken to the camp and my legs and arms tied with chains that bruised me badly. I slept in my own urine in an open air room while three small girls abducted from Fundong too slept comfortably in another room opposite. I was released in the morning without any questions and simply asked to go back home after the superiors had ordered that I be taken to the health centre so some treatment can be given to my wounds and some pain killers administered. I was given back a few items collected from my house and told to go and make a list of all that was taken and that is how I came back home”.
The freed police officer was talking to friends and sympathizers who paid him a visit after hearing the news. The SUN paid him a visit and took interest in the reactions of the visitors towards the action of the Amba boys on someone they say has been more than helpful to the Fundong population as far as issuing of ID cards during this period of turmoil is concerned.
It is worth noting that many inhabitants of Fundong frown at the activities of the Amba Boys in Fundong which are rather an attack on the population as many put it. They say the Amba Boys harass them on daily basis, collecting money in the name of support in a punitive manner and even confiscate phones and other valuables from the population.
Listening to them speak gives one the impression that the Amba boys have lost the support of the population in Fundong and only fear makes them still control the town which may tantamount to massive sellout of the Boys in the nearest future.

It was a drama show between the military and amba fighters, during the 10 days lockdown in Boyo Division, declared by separatists in the entire Anglophone regions of Cameroon in a bid to frustrate the 11th of February Youth day celebrations.
Moving from Mbingo, a day before the beginning of the lockdown, to Baingo and Njinikejem, one observed the fast growing jungles around people’s homes and around the roads that hitherto were always well cleared and paved. Burnt mansions along the way like the residence of the Former PM’s in-laws in Njinikejem, abandoned houses and already turned tojungle towns like the Belo Town that was once considered the economic hub of Boyo division, deserted schools like St. Bede’s College AshingKom thecitadel of Excellence in education that attracted both foreigners and nationals from some of the most reputable families in the Republic of Cameroon, The SUN met with the first road block at Ashing at 7PM. It was at this point that hopes of going right through to Fundong were almost dashed and thoughts of doing the rest of the 50 Kilometers journey on foot crept in.
It was at this point that The SUN’s already determined to trek correspondent noticed the locals of Boyodivision had learned to let life continue undisturbed in the presence of two armed parties. A few calls were made here and there and some fierce looking and hoarse voiced guys crept out of the bushes after an hour’s wait, then followed serious bargaining between the drivers and the fierce looking fellows. They were arguing over a control settlement price of FCFA 10.000 per car for the three stranded cars. Almost completely frustrated, the drivers and passengers put heads together and raised only FCFA 5000 each earning another 30 minutes of price tussle between the boys and drivers.
At this point, a big man in the ranks of the Amba guys was called who handed firm instructions for the cars to be allowed to pass without any further delay and for a reimbursement of all the money collected. The first order was immediately heeded but the second; No! The same guys were taken to open a second road block at Sho village in Belo Sub Division. The ride from there through Kikfuini, Bobong, Njinikom, Nkoini and Boyui in Fundong sub division was smooth but ended half way because it was too late to get into Fundong Town.

Monday 4th onwards saw a strange lockdown drama in Fundong subdivision characterized by flogging and chasing home of women who thought it was wise to use the lockdown days to go to their farms by Amba boys. Women were beaten and chased home at Ngwah, Fujua, Atoini  andMeli villages. Back in town, on Tuesday 5th, all was totally locked and all indoors. People around Fujua road were asked by Amba Boys to leave their kitchens and enter their houses even without cooking as they passed by to fire some shots of the hunting guns at the Fundong grandstand.
The heat of the lockdown happened on Friday February 9, 2019 when some three girls whose names could only be gotten as Emmanuela, Thelma and Njang all in their teenage age were “arrested” by Amba boys and taken to their Abuh Camp. The three girls were accused of rampant sexual affairs with the military officers deployed to Fundong. Their arrest sparked an outrage and about an hour later, a young boy in his late 20s by name O’Brien Timti was pulled out reportedly by the military from his house and shot dead on the head at close range at the Fundong grandstand.
O’Brien is said to have been claiming around town that he was an Amba soldier and had been harassing people and collecting money from them. He is reported to have been seen harassing a stranded traveler from Wum claiming he was the one to issue the said traveler a pass to move through the Amba control posts along the road. He is said to have been arrested and flogged by the Amba boys of Fundong twice. Some denizens of Fundong therefore think that O’Brien was well servedin his coins. A military official on anonymity identity we choose to conceal told The Sun many people attested to having been duped by O’Brien after he was shot dead.
It was this move that sent even more fear in the minds of the people, meanwhile Amba boys were present in town but only firing gunshots when the military had either passed their location or were nowhere to be found. This attitude makes Fundong denizens think they are scared of the military but only vent their anger on the helpless population who now fear the Amba Boys with their all. Many attest to have lost their cell phones and other sophisticated gadgets to them and frown at their treatment of the elderly in Fundong. They think the Amba boys have deliberately embarked on a hide and seek game by planting informants in town who give them the exact location of the military at every instance. The military too on its part has informants among the population that give them the location of the Boys at some instances.
These activities greatly hindered Youth Day activities in Boyo as even the Fundong grandstand that was cleaned by some arrested youths on Sunday morning supervised by the military was invaded by the Amba Boys on the D-Day, putting a halt to everything that was to take place there. Attempts to talk with the SDO at his residence failed as he relayed through his maid that he was not ready to receive any body.
The three arrested girls have not been released yet, but their mother has brought some decent dresses to them as they were arrested in very seductive dresses.

It is almost 3years since the Anglophone crisis erupted in the North West and South West regions of the country and not much has been put in place to bring a lasting solution.
Recently in Bamenda, several people have been subject to harassment by unidentified individuals who refer to themselves as ‘ambazonian soldiers’. This has created panic amongst denizens of the town who do not know who or what to believe.
Some people have complained of receiving calls from strange numbers, with the callers threatening to kill them should they not send money to them. While some fearing the unknown comply to this, others just tell them that they have nothing to offer.
In other cases, they just ignore the threats. “We know that amba guys sometimes ask for money but with the recent phone call threats, one is tempted to believe that thieves have taken advantage of the situation and are feeding fat from it. I remember receiving a call from a young man who said he is an ambazonian soldier and immediately I sounded like I knew him, he dropped the call and never rang my phone again”, a driver narrated to The SUN.
Some business persons have also complained about receiving several calls from different people saying they are ambazonian soldiers and that they needed their own contribution to the struggle. “I have received so many calls from people who say they are ambazonian soldiers and that should I fail to give my own support, they will burn my shop. In fact I am almost used to such calls so much that it doesn’t scare me anymore”, a business man recounted.
It has been almost a normal thing for one to wake up and find someone standing at his/her door saying he is an amba fighter and needs support from them. Inhabitants of the travelers neighborhood in Bamenda have experienced this severally as The Sun gathered from residuals of the quarter. Recently, an incident occurred when some two young boys were moving around demanding money from people and threatening to deal with them. After succeeding for some days, they were reported to have been captured by an abazonian ‘general’ and their fingers chopped off.
People who had fallen victims of these boys were happy such a punishment was meted on the imposters. “I wish all these thieves claiming to be ambazonian fighters are given similar treatment”, an angry residual said.
As the anglophone crisis heightens, more thieves are getting into the system, making life difficult for residuals of the two affected regions. Some are even very happy with the ongoing situation as they are living fat from it while the poor masses continue to languish in poverty. In the midst of this uncertainty, denizens of Bamenda have continued to hope and pray for a lasting solution to be brought to the crisis so that life can return to normal.
