26th Convocation Ceremony: University of Buea celebrates excellence, innovation

The University of Buea marked its 26th Convocation Ceremony with grandeur and reflection, marking a significant milestone in the academic journey of its graduates while emphasising the importance of science, technology, and innovation in addressing the nation’s socio-economic challenges.

Held at the Herbert Nganjo Endeley Open-Air Amphitheatre from Thursday, January 9 to Saturday, January 11, 2025, the event saw the conferment of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees to graduates from various faculties, including the Advanced School of Translators and Interpreters, College of Technology, and Faculty of Health Science, covering batches from 2021 to 2024 amongst other faculties who were found worthy by the Senate, in character and learning after fulfilling all the requirements of the University.

A highlight of the ceremony was the conferment of an Honorary Doctor of Business Management (Honoris Causa) to Kate Kanyi-Tometi Fotso, CEO of Telcar Cocoa, in recognition of her philanthropic contributions, including a five-year education subsidy of FCFA 50 million to support University of Buea students.

VC emphasises importance of education

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Buea, Professor Ngomo Horace Manga opened the ceremony with a heartfelt address, emphasising the importance of education in shaping the future of individuals and society. He applauded the graduates for their resilience and dedication through challenging academic years, including adapting to online learning. He expressed deep appreciation to stakeholders for their support in fostering quality education and acknowledged the government’s unwavering assistance in the university’s growth.

“Today we celebrate not just your academic achievements, but your resilience and determination in the face of diversity. Dear graduates, you all have studied hard, successfully managed deadlines and brilliantly conquered examinations. You faced unimaginable challenges and navigated moments of doubt. You stood your ground, even in the worst situations, characterised by sleeplessness and stress. Your persistence is your greatest accomplishment. As we celebrate your success today, remember that the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” Professor Ngomo encouraged the graduates.

Professor Ngomo also highlighted the university’s ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between education and employment through initiatives such as entrepreneurship training and the planned establishment of business incubators to support student innovations from conception to commercialisation. He also highlighted the university’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation, noting that UB continues to adapt to its curriculum to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. He encouraged the graduates to leverage their education to contribute positively to their communities and uphold the values of integrity and service.

Keynote address by Professor P.K. Titanji

Delivering the keynote address, distinguished guest speaker, Professor Vincent P.K. Titanji challenged graduates to leverage science, technology, and innovation to tackle societal issues and secure meaningful employment.  He spoke on the theme “Navigating the Future: The role of Education in a changing world”. He stressed the need for stronger focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines to drive Cameroon’s industrial and economic development. “Advanced countries thrive because of their mastery of science and technology. It is imperative that we invest in STEM education if we are to address unemployment and underdevelopment”. He encouraged the graduates to embrace lifelong learning and to remain adaptable in an era characterised by technological advancements and global challenges.

Professor Titanji also addressed global challenges such as climate change, biotechnology revolutions and digital misinformation, urging graduates to diversify their skills and uphold ethical standards as they transition into the workforce. He emphasised the importance of citizenship education, flexibility, and proactive engagement, reminding graduates that “no action, no result” should be their guiding principle.

“Education is not just about acquiring knowledge; it is about developing the skills to think critically and to solve problems” Prof. Titanji remarked. He also encouraged the graduates to be proactive in seeking opportunities for personal and professional growth, emphasising the importance of networking and collaboration in today’s interconnected world.

Recognition of outstanding students

The ceremony also recognised outstanding students, with Asong Kluvert Afangha, a First-Class Honours graduate in Biochemistry with a GPA of 3.93, receiving the President’s Prize for Best Student. Noumbo Boughe Cynthia Megane was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize for Best Female Student with a GPA of 3.87. Different prizes were awarded to other students in different fields for their outstanding performances.

In his valedictory address, the best graduating student for 2023/2024, Asong Kluvert Afangha with a GPA of 3.93 First Class Honours in Biochemistry, Faculty of Science revealed that the academic journey has been a challenging, yet immensely rewarding experience. “Like many of you, my journey was not without its obstacles and setbacks, from late night school study to overcoming academic hurdles and personal challenges. Each one of us has faced our own unique struggles on the path to this moment, yet through perseverance, determination, and unwavering support from our academic staff and peers, we have been much stronger and more resilient than ever before. I will be missing something if I do not express my deepest gratitude to the dedicated academic staff of the University of Buea, to our professors, lecturers, advisors, and mentors. You have been beacons of knowledge, guidance, inspiration throughout our time here. Your unwavering commitment to our academic and personal growth has shaped us into the individuals we are today. Without your mentorship and support, we would not be standing here today, ready to take on the world. On behalf of the graduating class of 2024, I would like to thank you for your support” he concluded.
