Gov’t launches fresh pursuit of more MRC militants, sympathizers

BY SANDRA LUM

The government of Cameroon, through the defence and security forces, has established both search and arrests warrants for the apprehension of many alleged militants and sympathizers of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement better known in its French acronym as MRC all over the national territory.

The alleged MRC militants and sympathizers have been considered as dangerous and threats to the public and declared wanted. The population has equally been urged to be vigilant and report to the closest gendarmerie or police stations if they have information about the suspects.

One of such militants and sympathizers is Mekoudjou Wambe Gwendoline Audrey,   a mother of two, former Secretary to the wife of the Director of National Oil Refining Company, SONARA, and at times Translator and Interpreter to the Director of SONARA.

Mekoudjou Wambe Gwendoline Audrey, MRC sympathiser on the run

Mekoudjou has been declared wanted by security operatives and is currently on the run. Reports say she was picked up by plain clothes security officers at the residence of her employer at Omnisports Nouvelle Route neighbourhood in Yaounde on June 7 2024. While at the State military security service, SEMIL, under the supervision of the SEMIL boss, Colonel Emile Joel Mbankui, she was tortured, molested and detained under cruel, inhumane and degrading condition for three days. This was on grounds that she stole huge amount of money and jewelries from his employer’s residence and equally leaked information to the press in relation to the inferno that ravaged SONARA in 2019.

As if this wasn’t enough, her residence was ransacked by SEMIL officers and they discovered that she is a militant and sympathizer of MRC. This new development aggravated her situation as she was accused of treason, hostilities against the state, misappropriation and aggravated theft, thus was to be prosecuted at the military tribunal and if found guilty, would have been sentenced to 25-30 years imprisonment. Reports say Mekoudjou Wambe Gwendoline Audrey miraculously escaped from detention.

As we went to press her whereabouts, according to family sources, remained cloudy as she has been declared wanted. Security operatives, according to family sources, are making constant patrol around their neighbourhood just to arrest and prosecute her, like many other MRC militants and sympathisers, for endangering state security, hostilities against the fatherland, insurrection, propagation of false information and revolution.

It should be recalled that ever since the MRC of Prof. Maurice Kamto challenged the outcome of the 2018 presidential elections for having been rigged in favour of the President Paul Biya, who has been in power for close to 42 years militants and sympathizers of the MRC have been under security searchlight and are frequently arrested, tortured.

Sometime in 2019, the MRC National President, Prof. Maurice Kamto; Secretary General of the party, Alain Fogue; National Treasurer, Olivier Bibou Nissack and other party bigwigs including Paul Eric Kingue, Mamadou Mota  Albert Ndzonga, Barrister  Ndocki Michele,  were incarcerated in Yaounde for endangering state security, hostilities against the fatherland, insurrection propagation of false information and revolution.

This was because they staged a peaceful demonstration, protest what they called their “stolen victory” at the 2018 Presidential Election. They were only released through a President clemency several months after.

Recently, a video went viral on social media in October 2024 showing how Cameroonian artist, Simon Lonkana Ango, popularly known by his artistic name as Longue Longue was cruelly tortured by elements of SEMIL in Douala because he disclosed in 2019 that MRC of Professor Maurice Kamto won the 2018 Presidential election but the election was rigged in favour of the CPDM party that has ruled Cameroon for over to four decades.
