- Conclusion
From the above, it is undoubtedly seen that Bishop Michael Bibi has been full time and completely present in his diocese administering the seven Sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Matrimony, and Holy Order. Since he officially took canonical possession of the Diocese of Buea on February 25, 2021, the diocese has experienced an exponential growth which is incredibly and stupendously fabulous. In fact, extremely impressive. The number of members of the Catholic Men Association and Catholic Women Association have full-grown alongside devoutness and better organization thanks to his guidance and gigantic pastoral zeal which many have described as a bulldozer. He has dedicated a myriad of new CMA members defying all odds to dedicate over 90 in the fidgety Muyuka recently. Bishop Bibi’s pastoral style has been incomparable and totally harmony with Pope Francis who has encouraged pastors to go out of their comfort zones to meet Christians.
Bishop Bibi has been nicknamed as “the travelling bishop”, “the bulldozer bishop”, “the bishop with the smell of the sheep”. In fact, as you could see above, he has visited all the parishes in the nooks and crannies of Buea Diocese more than twice in just a year. He has played an enormous assuaging role especially during the shooting to death of the six-year-old pupil in Buea: Enondiale Tchuengia Carolaise. To further express his solidarity, he celebrated a memorial mass at St Charles Lwanga parish Molyko-Buea with members of the CUIB Academy of Talents Primary School to pray for the repose of her soul. Bishop Bibi has not been afraid to take the good news (Gospel) to his flock amidst gunfire in places like Muyuka, Owe, Ikata and so many other areas of the Diocese. Bishop Bibi has been an incredible blessing to the diocese of Buea and a pastor with the smell of the sheep by his mere presence all over the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Buea.
Throughout his one year as Diocesan Bishop of Buea, Bishop Bibi has put into practice the eight beatitudes which Pope Francis shared with the bishops of Italy on November 22, 2021:
“1. Blessed is the bishop who makes poverty and sharing his lifestyle, because with his witness he builds the Kingdom of Heaven.
2.Blessed is the bishop who is not afraid to wet his face with tears, so that in them may be reflected the sorrow of the people, and the work of priests, and who finds God’ consolation in the embrace with those who suffer.
3.Blessed is the bishop who considers his ministry a service and not a power, who makes meekness his strength, gives everyone a right to a place in his heart, so as to give the promised land to the weak.
4.Blessed is the bishop who does not shut himself up in government buildings, who does not become a bureaucrat more attentive to statistics than to faces, to procedures than to stories, who seeks to fight alongside man for God’s dream of justice because the Lord, encountered in the silence of daily prayer, will nourish him.
5.Blessed is the bishop who has a heart for the misery of the world. Who is not afraid to dirty his hands with the mud of the human soul in order to find the gold of God there, who is not scandalized by the sin and fragility of others because he knows his own misery, because the look of the Risen Crucified One will be the seal of infinite forgiveness.
6.Blessed is the bishop stays away from the duplicity of the heart, who avoids every ambiguous dynamic, who dreams of the good even in the midst of evil, because he will be able to rejoice in the face of God, finding His reflection in every puddle in the city of people.
7.Blessed is the bishop who works for peace, who walks along the path of reconciliation, who plants the seed of communion in the hearts of priests, who accompanies a divided society along the path of reconciliation, who takes every man and woman of goodwill by the hand to build fraternity: God will recognize him as his son.
8.Blessed is the bishop who is not afraid to go against the current for the Gospel, and hardens his face like Jesus going to Jerusalem, without letting himself be stopped by misunderstandings and obstacles because he knows that the Kingdom of God moves forth against the world.”
Finally, with regards to my sources and references, I give profound credit to the “Divine Mercy Radio and TV Service of the Diocese of Buea” for their seasoned and unrelenting updates and postings on their Facebook page. It was thanks to their Facebook page that I was able to peruse the pastoral activities of the Bishop of Buea and transcribe them as you can see. It was utterly time consuming to transcribe especially with the myriad pastoral visits which Bishop Bibi has made in just one year but as the Spanish saying goes, “Donde hay voluntad hay un camino” (Where there is a will, there is a way). Ad multos annos Bishop Michael Miabesue Bibi! May you live long in perfect health! I admire your pastoral zeal; you are a bulldozer bishop, continue to “Duc in Altum” (Put out into the deep)!
