In a major political development in Cameroon, Hon. Datouo Théodore has been elected as the new Speaker of the National Assembly, bringing an end to the 33-year leadership of Cavaye Yéguié Djibril at the helm of the country’s lower legislative chamber.

Hon. Datouo Théodore, a Member of Parliament from Upper Plateau in the West Region and until now Vice-President of the National Assembly, assumes office at a time many observers describe as a significant turning point in Cameroon’s parliamentary history. His election, which took place today, March 17, 2026 under directives from the Central Committee of Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, signals a fresh phase in the leadership of one of the country’s key democratic institutions.
Originally from Bangou in the West Region, Datouo Théodore is widely known within parliamentary circles for his experience and longstanding involvement in legislative affairs. His rise to the top position follows years of service within the National Assembly, where he played a visible role in debates and internal coordination as Vice-President. Political analysts believe his appointment reflects both continuity and a desire for gradual renewal within the ruling party’s leadership structure.
The departure of Cavaye Yéguié Djibril marks the end of an era. Having served as Speaker for over three decades, he was one of the longest-serving parliamentary leaders in Africa and a central figure in Cameroon’s legislative politics. His tenure witnessed several major political reforms, constitutional debates, and national challenges.
Meanwhile, reports also suggest that further institutional changes may soon affect the Senate. Sources indicate that Marcel Niat Njifenji could be replaced by Aboubakary Abdoulaye, the Lamido of Rey-Bouba and current First Vice-President of the Senate. Though no official confirmation has yet been issued, the possibility adds to indications of a broader political reshuffle at the highest levels of Cameroon’s legislative leadership.
The development is expected to attract strong national attention in the coming hours as reactions continue to emerge across political circles.
