Wanda Matandela Appointed as New CEO of MTN Cameroon

The South African telecom giant MTN proclaimed the change of leadership in its Cameroon subsidiary. In March 2025, Wanda Matandela will take over from Mitwa Ng’ambi as the CEO of MTN Cameroon. Matandela has been a member of the boards of Supersonic (Pty) and MTN Rwanda, and he was the Chief Commercial Officer with MTN South Africa.

Matendela took over as Chief Enterprise Business Officer at MTN in 2018, when he had already started the restructuring process within the enterprise business unit. “With over 20 years of experience including 13 years in wholesale and telecoms, he has covered core strategic roles in fast-moving consumer goods and financial services,” said MTN in the announcement.
The company’s leadership expresses faith in Matandela’s abilities, saying his deep commercial understanding and stakeholder management abilities will build the momentum generated under Mitwa Ng’ambi. Moreover, his fresh approach and view will hopefully accelerate growth within Cameroon.
In Cameroon, Matandela’s ambition is fairly clear—improve service quality, something the government and consumers often lay claim to. Besides this, his critical challenge will be managing the company’s new investments, especially on expansion and strengthening of the network. It will contribute nearly CFA62 billion ($100 million) investment in 2025, as an initial step in a $300 million, three-year investment program.

The leadership shuffle is taking the cue from the early retirement of CEO Djibril Ouattara of MTN CĂ´te d’Ivoire, while Mitwa Ng’ambi was transferred to assume the responsibilities that Ouattara had already left with MTN Cameroon.
As MTN Cameroon gears up to mark 25 years of its operations in the country next year, the growth of telecommunications has shaped the role of the company. It has utilized mobile financial services and electronic communications to reach out to almost 13 million users. As a result, MTN declares the addition of 1,000 direct jobs to its current numbers.
