The Conservator of the Limbe Zoological Center, Etta Agbor Hans has warned the population of Idenau Subdivision not to consume the dead elephant discovered at a locality known as Wete Wete on Thursday, January 16, 2025. He explained that the meat is not healthy for human consumption.

On Friday, January 17, 2025, Agbor Etta explained that analysis of the dead elephant showed no physical injuries while samples collected revealed the presence of huge maggots are found inside the elephant. He Emphasised that it means it must have suffered an infection prior to its death.
“According to the virtue of the new 2025 Forestry Law, the elephant is a Class A endangered species in Cameroon, thus anyone found with a part of it is exposed to a huge fine of between 20 and 50 million CFA Francs in addition to imprisonment”, Agbor said.
He furthered that, “Consumption of the infected meat would expose the community to zoonotic diseases and other health hazards. So, anybody who has already prepared pepper soup and Ebanga plantains with the elephant meat should not eat it”, Agbor advised.
He added that the animal did not die under any gunshot killed by a poacher, meaning it could have died by infection. “The animal died of a cause we don’t know; it means it’s not fit for consumption” he reiterates.
