Yaoundé Orders Mokolo Traders to Clear Streets and Move Into Market Stalls

The mayor of Yaoundé has ordered traders operating along public roads near Mokolo market to clear the area by February 5 and relocate into designated market facilities, as the city moves to ease congestion and restore access to sidewalks and traffic lanes.

In a Feb. 3 statement, the mayor, Luc Messi Atangana, said the measure applies to shopkeepers, street vendors, and operators of makeshift garages occupying sidewalks and public roads along the stretch from the headquarters of the Cameroonian Football Federation to Niki Mokolo.

The area affected covers about two kilometers, cutting through the densely populated Briqueterie neighborhood and part of Mokolo, one of Yaoundé’s busiest commercial districts and a major traffic corridor.

City authorities say the spaces are being illegally occupied by traders of various kinds. Those affected have been instructed to move into hangars built and fitted out by the municipality to host commercial activities and clear the roads.

The city says it has provided an alternative in the form of municipal market hangars with a total capacity of about 1,500 stalls. According to a municipal official, the monthly rent for a stall has been set at CFA5,000.

Mr. Messi Atangana said he had already visited the site to raise awareness among traders ahead of the deadline set by the eviction order.
