The leader of the telecommunications sector in the country, MTN Cameroon has been given an Excellence Award in recognition of its efforts through MTN Mobile Money to simplify accounts ownership thereby promoting financial inclusion. The Prize was received by the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Cameroon, Hendrik Kasteel last June 19, 2019 at the Yaounde Hilton Hotel during the closing ceremony of a two-day forum on financial inclusion in Cameroon placed under the auspices of the Minister of Finance, Louis Paul Motaze and the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Minette Libom Li Likeng.
The CEO of MTN Cameroon was accompanied by the Director of MTN Mobile Money, Alain Nono and the company’s Senior Manager Enterprise Information Security, Lydie Ngo Nogol.
On how MTN users can authenticate information coming from MTN or scammers, Lydie Nogol said “While our customers must always remain vigilant, they must know that MTN does not call with anonymous numbers. MTN sends SMS on label of MoMo. Another key issue is that MTN will never ask for a client’s password because our contract with customers doesn’t allow us to do that. We always advise our customers not to share their passwords with other persons.”
On mechanisms MTN is putting in place to secure electronic transactions, the company’s Security official reiterated the need for “Customers to develop a culture of not sharing their passwords or identification words with whosoever.”
According to the General Coordinator of Financial Inclusion Forum, Georges Meka Abessolo who is a financial expert, the forum which took place on the theme “succeed in the digital transformation of the banking sector and financial services in Cameroon”, enabled participants to propose interoperability among various companies concerned and that banks should develop digital technology options in order to meet up with the need of their customers.
Closing the forum, Posts and Telecommunications Minister, Minette Libom Li Likeng who also received Excellence Award from organizers, rejoiced that “the forum falls squarely in line with government policy of developing digital technology in Cameroon.”
She congratulated the over 200 participants drawn from public administration, private sector and enterprises for the quality brainstorming that marked the two-day event.
She stressed that “digital technology innovation is key to solving the huge gap of people not having bank accounts in the country.”
The P&T boss congratulated the Risks Mitigation LLC, Audit Consulting Assurance Forensic Firm for organizing the forum.
