Wotutu-Ewongo football tournament: Fearless FC win opening tournament

The 3rd edition of the annual Wotutu-Ewongo Inter-Quarter Football Competition organised during the long vacation kickoff on Sunday, July 9, 2023 at Catholic School field in Wotutu, village in Buea Sub-division, Fako Division with Fearless FC defeating Elangwe FC by 1 goal to nile.

The Second Edition of the Wotutu-Ewongo Inter quarter Football competition was launched with the hope that it would breed the next generation of football talents in the country.

Dubbed “peace and social cohesion”, the tournament runs from Sunday, July 9 to Sunday August 27, 2023. A winner is expected to emerge from the 10 teams after 44 games at the Wotutu-Ewongo Catholic School Field.

Speaking shortly after the opening the representative of the promoter Geraud Eselem said the tournament is just the beginning of what is coming as they are looking forward to do greater things for the community.  He added that their main focus is to continue to give hope and unity to the people of Wotutu village.

Meanwhile the president of Elangwe FC Elangwe Esoue said he is not disappointed that he was defeated in his first match. He added that they will do more better in the next matches. Esoue urged his supporters and fans to rally behind them and give them the support.

This year’s edition will bring together the top teams of the Wotutu-Ewongo community in the Bonjongo court area as they compete for a total cash prize of FCFA 1 million CFA. The competition will span over six weeks with the crowning of a third champion on Sunday August 27, 2023.

“The first edition of the Wotutu-Ewongo Inter quarter football competition was to bring hope to the community at the heart of the socio-political crisis which affected Wotutu village. More than 80% of the community including women and children fled the community between 2016 and 2020.” Edwin Eselem said.

The tournament was an opportunity to rally the youth and bring a new lease of life

in the village. Over the last two editions, the competition has benefitted from massive popular support not only from the community but from friends, community development actors, sympathisers and lovers of the beautiful game.

About the Wotutu-Ewongo Football Competition

The Wotutu-Ewongo Football is an annual football competition bringing together the top football teams of the Wotutu-Ewongo villages in the Bonjongo court area during the holiday season.

The tournament was created out of the need to occupy the youth during their vacation but most importantly preach peace and social cohesion after the community was badly affected by the Anglophone crisis. Now in its third edition, the tournament uses the convening power of sports to change lives and uplift the community.
