Military attack on civilians leads to tragic consequences

In the early hours of Monday, January 9, 2023, a disturbing incident unfolded in Buea, South West Region of Cameroon as the military raided a neighbourhood and attacked civilians.

The attack resulted in the shooting of two individuals and extensive destruction of property. One of those shot later died before the population could reach the hospital, while the other victim remains in critical condition. The military action sparked outrage and demands for accountability from both local and international communities.

How the attack unfolded

Eyewitnesses recounted a scene of chaos and terror as military personnel descended upon a peaceful civilian student residential area, unleashing a barrage of gunfire, directly targeting civilians and students. causing widespread panic.

The unprovoked nature of the attack left many bewildered and deeply troubled especially the excessive use of force against innocent civilians. The attack is related to the ongoing Anglophone crisis. The military, according to our information, are accusing the students and the population of being Ambazonians advocating for the separation of the country.

Loss of life and injuries

Tragically, one civilian whose name we got as Ebot John succumbed to injuries before medical assistance could be administered, marking a devastating loss for the family and community. Meanwhile, the other victim, Luma Peter Ajongakoh is fighting for his life as we got reports that he is currently unconscious and in critical condition.

The SUN newspaper had to tardy with its report to confirm the names of the dead civilian, Ebot John and that of his neighbor Luma Peter Ajongkakoh whose leg was seriously rained with bullets causing very deep and horrifying wounds which for professional reasons The SUN cannot publish.

Effects and Damages.

In addition to the loss of life and injuries, the military’s actions resulted in significant damage to properties within the affected area. Homes, businesses, and infrastructures bore the brunt of the assault, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The long-term repercussions of this destruction are likely to have far-reaching effects on the community.

Calls for justice and accountability

In response to this egregious violation of human rights, there has been a groundswell of demands for justice and accountability. Civil society organizations, human rights advocates, and concerned citizens have condemned the military’s actions and calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Government’s statement

Despite mounting pressure from national and international community, government officials initially stayed mute but after heightened pressure, government sources accused both Luma Peter Ajongakoh and John who were shot as being members and active supporters of Ambazonia (a political entity proclaimed by anglophone separatists seeking independence from Cameroon).

Fear and panic remain high as the community predicts more and worse incidents are yet to come. Families and civilians have fled for the unknown.
