The Kumba City Council Grandstand on May 17 was set ablaze by unknown individuals as a means to frustrate the 45th National Day celebration in Kumba.
According to some workers of the City Council, they discovered the fire during the early hours of May 17 when they came to work, after the flames have already consumed the back part, some part of the ceiling and some pillars of the grandstand. They immediately put out the fire before it could raze the entire structure.
The grandstand was then put under the surveillance of the forces of law and order for fear of a second attempt while the damaged areas were quickly renovated ahead of the National Day celebration.
The government Delegate to the Kumba City Council, Victor Ngoh Nkele lamented over the situation, ‘It cannot be fine to see that on preparations of the National Day, we have vandals who come to disturb us from enjoying on that day’.
He noted that it was an attempt by vandals to frustrate the National Day celebration in Kumba.
The city Boss further revealed that the matter has been reported to the administration and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure that the perpetuators of that act are caught and brought to book.
