Stakeholders in Limbe have stepped up efforts to clear the worrying garbage situation which is deteriorating the hygiene and sanitation condition of the municipality.
The deteriorating hygiene and sanitation situation of the municipality once noted for its very high standards in cleanliness was a major issue that came up during a recent Town Hall meeting organised by the City Council led by the City Mayor, Paul Efome.
Following up on this, the Senior Divisional Officer for Fako, ViangMekala called a meeting of stakeholders on Thursday, October 10, 2024 at the Limbe City Council Hall in Down Beach Limbe.
Focus in the meeting was on the disturbing garbage situation. Garbage is virtually found at every turn of the city, at times stretching along long distances.
While the tonnage of garbage has increased exponentially according to HYSACAM officials as a result of population explosion, Limbe having become a haven for those fleeing the crisis in the North West and South West Regions, blame was heaped on the uncivil behaviour of denizens who throw their household waste on the roads and everywhere.
Thus sensitization of the population was a major component of measures to be taken to curb the impending environmental hazard.
To this end and to get the population more involved, the Honourable Member of Parliament for Fako East and deputy CPDM Chief Whip at the National Assembly proposed the reinstitution of the Cleanest Quarter competition which will see the population led by quarter heads and chiefs fully involved.
To boost the exercise, the MP gave a cash donation of FCFA one million to kick-start the exercise.
There were more donations especially from a chief in the hall who gave FCFA 100, 000.
During the meeting HYSACAM announced the acquisition of a Front-End Loader to ease the exercise of clearing the garbage and loading of trucks. The absence of this equipment had been a major setback in the cleaning exercise.
The HYSACAM boss was however refused his request for fuel to be provided to his vehicles.

During the ceremony to present the new equipment last October 11, Limbe City Mayor, Paul Efome said they, together with HYSACAM are doing everything possible to free the streets from accumulated garbage. He revealed that the Council is equally planning on acquiring another heavy machine known as Crane which shall be in charge of cleaning waste on the shores of Down Beach daily.
With current efforts being multiplied daily, it is hoped that the ugly situation will become history in the days ahead .
