The names of some members of the national assembly are making rounds on social media platforms suggesting that they have resigned.
This follows an impromptu address made by Hon. Joseph Njang Mbah Ndam on Friday, September 22, 2017 when angry protesters stormed his Batibo residence.
“Democracy has never been given on a platter of gold. Your freedom will never be given on a platter of gold,” the opposition member of Parliament began his address.
“Southern Cameroonians,” he continued, “have been slaves in the hands of President Biya. I had told Biya that if this country splits into two, then he will be responsible because we the Anglophones have been pushed to the wall for too long. This is the result. I am glad. I stayed home today so that if I soldier disturbs your march, I will join you on the streets.”
Mbah Ndam says the people have now taken over from where they stopped.
His words: “I have led people in Yaoundé in a protest march to Etoudi. We have written letters to Biya calling on him to call for a dialogue on the Southern Cameroon issue. I am happy that the people have taken their power. You have taken your powers into your hands. That is how we will continue until we see the light of day.”
Mbah Ndam told the protesters that he will not go back to Yaoundé until he sees where they are going. He says he believes that by October 1, this whole thing will be over.
“By October 1, this matter should be over and we should be looking at Buea, not Yaoundé,” Mbah Ndam maintains in an interview granted The Cameroon Journal.
Contacted on phone on Sunday, September 24 for a statement, Mbah Ndam said he has nothing more to say. He told our reporters by phone that all his opinions have already been presented and are making rounds on social media.
Mbah Ndam would not clearly say that he has resigned from parliament, even though we tried to push him further.
The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Cameroon says “we have no power and authority over the people we represent anymore. We must listen to them and carry their aspirations.”
The people declared Mbah Ndam’s house their presidency in Batibo, saying they will no longer submit under the authority of administration. They apparently hoisted a flag.
As we went to press, news went wild on social media that Honourables Joseph Wirba, Ndong Larry Hills, Joseph Banadzem and Bernard Forju had also resigned from the national assembly. All attempts to reach the MPs were futile was they would not take their phones.
