The population of Mamfe has in the past one month suffered a double charge on the acquisition of fiscal stamps following a scarcity and unavailability of the said stamps at the treasury and taxation offices.
They now, in desperation are forced to buy the FCFA 1,000 stamp at FCFA 1,700 and most recently at FCFA 2,000.
The SUN caught up with a youth at the DO’s office in Mamfe who was compiling documents for an entrance exam into the University of Bamenda and he narrated, with deep regrets, the fact that he had to buy three fiscal stamps for FCFA 6000.
At the taxation of office in Mamfe, it is clearly written; “Stamps are not available” but some youths are on standby reading to make brisk business out of the situation by prosing to sell the stamps to the disappointed youths.
The stamps are said to have been brought in from Bamenda and sold to those in need at twice the cost.
The system seems to well organized network as a young man approaches persons and gives them a number to call. The person on the other side of the phone sends the interested person to someone at the court, whose identity The Sun is withholding for obvious reasons, who sells the stamps at FCFA 2000.
Many youths who spoke to The SUN wondered why the government treasury would not have stamps while an individual at the courts has enough and is selling them at twice the mount.
“Is the Manyu treasury unable to provide stamps that individuals now do or is someone in the treasury doing business. Even the way they tell you there are no stamps gives one the impression that there is some complicity going on.”, a youth told The Sun.
