For more than three weeks now, Manyu division and Mamfe sub Division in particular has been the theatre for the inexplicable killings of military men, civilians and some unidentified attackers that are considered to be members of the separatists Ambazonian Army.
Atleast 15 military officers, according to official sources, have been confirmed killed in the North West and South West regions by unknown attackers while the death toll on the side of the separatists is yet to be known.
Most of the people The SUN spoke to in Mamfe say official reports from government are in sharp contrast to what they are witnessing on the ground.
However, some four military officers were again, this Monday December 18th 2017 killed in Kembong, a village along the Mamfe-Ekok corridor in broad daylight. This attack sent shockwaves across Mamfe and people, like last week, rushed back to their homes in total pandemonium.
The military is reported to have reposted after the attack and stormed Kembong. This is after the alleged attacker had left on a motorbike.
It is alleged that the military burnt down some buildings in retaliation and one civilian was reportedly shot.
Sporadic gunshots were also heard in Mamfe forcing most of the traders to close their shops and run to the safety of their homes.
It should be noted that Kembong is one of the localities in Mamfe where things went really sour during the October 1st demonstration which forced most of the youths to flee the village and seek refuge in the forests. The village has since October 1st had a heavy military presence with very strict patrols.
Meanwhile, unending gun battles between government forces and separatist armed groups have forced many people to travel in droves out of the division for safety.
Schools have been highly affected. There are numerous reports of people being tortured on a daily basis for reasons best known to the military. Many people have been arrested randomly and locked up. A young lady, names withheld, was arrested for answering a phone call in which the caller was enquiring after her safety and that of the family after the attacks. She was followed by a military officer and arrested just for telling her caller what the situation in Mamfe was.
The few people who are still in Mamfe say they are living in fear and expecting the worst at any moment from the hands of the military.
