In a chat with reporters at the end of the session last Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the National Assembly in Yaounde, Hon Osih wondered aloud why the President of the Republic deemed it necessary only to convene the electorate for Senate election last March 25, 2018 at the time Parliament was also in session.
The no nonsense politician decried that “without exaggerating, I can say that the just ended March 2018 session was a session for nothing because unfortunately the executive convened Senate election within the session thereby obliging Members of Parliament to rather spend 2 to 3 weeks in the field campaigning for senatorial candidates than concentrating on deliberations at the Lower and Upper Houses of Parliament as it is traditionally the case.”
He said this while hoping that President Paul Biya does not disturb their deliberations during the upcoming June 2018 session with another election.
However, House Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Cavaye Yeguie Djibril Sounded rather satisfied with the work done by the end of the session. He noted that despite the 2018 Senate election, the March 2018 Session was rich in normal parliamentary activities. He cited the case of the first ever Congress of Parliament that witnessed the swearing in of pioneer members of the Constitutional Council, the examination and adoption of 4 bills and the holding of 2 plenary sittings dedicated to question time as well as the organization of a Parliamentary Action Day on Peace and Conflict Resolution.
