Cameroon Bar worried over frequent attacks on Lawyers by gendarmes

The Cameroon Bar Association has expressed disgust over the repeated attacks on Lawyers by some elements of the national gendarmerie. Lawyers in Cameroon have been complaining about the frequent attacks on them by some gendarme officers as well as obstacles faced by Lawyers in some gendarmerie units in the country.
In a communiqué from the desk of the President of the Cameroon Bar Association, Barrister Tchakoute Patie Charles, endorsed on Thursday, August 1, 2019, the Bar President, reacting to the recent assault on a member of the Cameroon Bar, Barrister Amungwa Nicodemus Tanyi by two gendarmerie officers last Saturday, July 27, 2019, in Yaounde, concluded that following findings on the incident, the Lawyer was seriously assaulted by gendarmerie officers without any provocation.
The Bar boss regretted the fact that Barrister Amungwa Nicodemus Tanyi was admitted in the hospital due to multiple bodily injuries he suffered. To this effect, the Bar President said “not only is the assault, against a Lawyer inadmissible, the recurrence of such attacks cannot leave the Bar indifferent.”
Consequently, Barrister Tchakoute has urged the representative of the Bar President of the Center, East and South regions to address a complaint with the Attorney General of the Center Court of Appeal on behalf of the Cameroon Bar about the incident.
In the days ahead, the Bar President after having addressed a letter to the Secretary of State for Defence in Charge of the National Gendarmerie denouncing the repeated attacks on Lawyers, shall be meeting the Gendarmerie boss to dissect this burning issues.
