The Governor of the East Region, Gregoire Mvongo who was recently designated UNICEF Champion of the rights of children for access to water and sanitation, visited the Ngoura Sub Division last March 20, 2023. Accompanied by UNICEF Bureau Head for Bertoua, Mohamed Aly, he wanted to know the level of avancement and realisation of water projects in this part of the country.
An evaluation was carried out in 2017 indicating that potable water points in the East region showed that Ngoura locality had a dessert rate in water about 39%.
The population estimated at about 6408 inhabitants had just 10 water systems. Taking into consideration the high vulnerability of children of Ngoura, UNICEF decided to support government efforts in the amelioration of access to potable water by financing the construction of water systems.
Since 2017, UNICEF has constructed in this community, 19 wells equiped with hand pumps and 10 photovoltaic systems photovoltaïques (wells, water tanks, solar pumps and stand pipes) supplying about 53 public stand pipes in schools and health facilities.
The Ngoura photovoltaic potable water system was the main step of the visit of the Governor and his delegation. Constructed thanks to UNICEF support this water system powered by solar energy enables the population to store up to 80 000 litres of water per day and supplies a distribution network of 17 stand pipes of 3 tap seach redistributed in many areas of the locality with schools and health facilities.
The UNICEF Champion of Water said “the population that saw are satisfied with what the State and its UNICEF partner have realized in this community so that each and every member of this community have access to potable water. This is an important challenge for us to attain the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals.”
