AFCON 2023: Senegal coach hospitalized after win over Cameroon

After Senegal’s 3-1 Africa Cup of Nations victory over Cameroon, head coach Aliou Cissé was admitted to the hospital due to illness.

Following the game in Yamoussoukro late on Friday, the 47-year-old Cissé was brought to a nearby hospital and kept there all night.

After his condition became better, he was supposed to be freed later on Saturday.

“He’s doing well,” Senegal team spokesperson Kara Thioune said.

During Friday’s post-game news conference, Cissé spoke with reporters without displaying any overt signs of illness.

The reigning champions, Senegal, had just secured their spot in the round of 16 with their second straight victory in Group C.

In their last group match, Senegal takes on Guinea on Tuesday in Yamoussoukro.

According to the Senegalese FA, Cisse was treated by the medical staff at the Yamoussoukro hospital.

The Senegalese FA in a statement confirmed the incident and also revealed that Abdallah Sima has left the squad and returned to Glasgow Rangers due to Injury.

“The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) informs the public that coach Aliou Cisse was treated by the medical staff and care services of Yamoussoukro hospital for a benign infectious pathology on Friday, January 19, 2024 in in the evening, after the Senegal-Cameroon match.
