The General Manager of the National Refining Company SONARA, Jean-Paul SIMO NJONOU has published a communique announcing the imminent creation of an Anglophone section in the SONARA College in Limbe.
The communique states that the Anglophone section is to effectively go operational come the start of the 2019-2020 school year.
This, according to SIMO NJONOU is in line with the ‘policy of Living Together and Multiculturalism, advocated by the Head of State, President Paul Biya’.
The General Manager states “I have instructed the Director of the SONARA College, the Director of General Affairs and that of Administration and Human Resources, to take all necessary measures aimed at ensuring the opening of an Anglophone Section at the SONARA College”.
The SONARA boss continues that “I invite all workers with children enrolled in class six of the English-speaking sub-system of the SONARA School, to serenely prepare for the start of the 2019-2020 academic year, by contacting officials of the SONARA College”.
The SONARA College it should be recalled is a school for students whose parents are workers of the National Refining Company, and the institution has been operating for decades now.
In the past, it was a strictly francophone institution, where in students of the Anglo-saxon system of education did not have the privilege of attending, even if their parents were SONARA workers.
With this innovation brought in by SIMO NJONOU, it will of course place workers’ kids under the same canopy, irrespective of where they hail from in Cameroon.
In Limbe, the news of the innovation has been received with mixed feelings. While some inhabitants question why such an initiative is being taken only now, after many years since the institution came into existence, others have congratulated the new SONARA GM for what they consider a powerful stride necessary in the present context and pray all hands be put on deck to ensure the initiative see the light of day, come September
