Bakweri Youth Association (BAYA) ushers in new leadership with vision for growth, cultural preservation

The Bakweri Youth Association (BAYA) has entered a new era of leadership as Tata Samuel Vefonge Mbene officially assumes office as the new President of the esteemed cultural organisation. During the handover ceremony held on February 16, 2025, in Buea, the new president reassured members and stakeholders of his commitment to strengthening the association’s core values and ensuring that the Bakweri culture continues to thrive.

A new dawn for BAYA

In his inaugural speech, Tata Samuel Vefonge Mbene emphasised the importance of unity, restructuring and cultural promotion.

“The vision of BAYA will always stand firm and strong,” he declared. “This association has grown from 15 members to over 200, and we intend to expand even further, ensuring that our cultural space remains vibrant.”

He further outlined his administration’s goals, including organising the first-ever BAYA 10-year anniversary celebration, introducing developmental programmes, and strengthening ties between BAYA and the broader community.

“This presidency demands that we reflect, evaluate, and make necessary corrections. It is not a task for me alone, but for all members of this association. We must align with the vision of BAYA, support one another and uphold the values that define us,” he urged.

Paramount Chief’s call for leadership with vision

The Paramount Chief of Buea, Chief Dr. Robert Esuka Endeley was present at the ceremony and delivered an impassioned address on leadership and vision. Drawing an analogy between leadership and a relay race, he stressed the importance of running within a given timeframe, making sound decisions and preparing successors for the future.

“Leadership is not about power or title; it is about vision and purpose,” he said. “A true leader listens, evaluates and makes firm decisions. BAYA’s new leadership must take into account the needs of its members and find ways to bring more Bakweri youth into the association.”

The chief further called for honesty in leadership, encouraging the new president to document challenges and actively seek solutions to strengthen the association.

Outgoing president, Luma David’s reflections and achievements

Outgoing President, Luma David, in his farewell address, expressed gratitude to the association for their unwavering support during his tenure. He reflected on the major achievements under his leadership, including the growth of cultural programmes, educational initiatives such as Mokwe language classes, community service projects and successful income-generating activities.

He proudly highlighted the BAYA Bio-Rentals project and the allocation of free land to 150 Bakweri youth in Monde village, a major milestone in the association’s history.

“BAYA is more than just an organisation; it is a family, a cultural institution, and a beacon of unity for the Bakweri people,” he stated. He also addressed criticisms against the association, dismissing negative perceptions and encouraging members to focus on the positive impact BAYA continues to make.

Vision for the future: Interview with new president

In an interview with the press, Tata Samuel Vefonge Mbene laid out his immediate plans for BAYA’s future. He emphasised the need for structural improvements, fostering a sense of belonging among members and increasing partnerships for development.

“We are restructuring BAYA to ensure a stronger foundation. Our focus will be on developmental programmes that benefit our members and strengthen our relationship with external partners. This is an open call for Bakweri youth to join and take ownership of their culture,” he said.

The new executive team, comprising Vice President Iya Ngoumbah Laura, Secretary Iya Limunga Blanche, Treasurer Iya Liengu Hannah and other dedicated members, is set to work towards achieving these objectives.

As BAYA embarks on this new chapter, the leadership remains optimistic about the association’s role in fostering unity, cultural preservation, and youth empowerment. With the unwavering support of its members and community, the Bakweri Youth Association is poised for remarkable growth in the coming years.
