The dust is yet to settle on the barbaric massacre of more than 20 civilians on the early hours of Monday, November 6, 2023 at Egbekaw village, a locality in Mamfe Sub Division, Manyu Division South West Region of Cameroon.
Following the gruesome act that also left scores injured, by unknown gunmen, condemnation and condolence messages have been pouring from different strata of the society. The Cameroon Bar Association through her Human Rights Commission and the Social Democratic Front, SDF, through their South West Regional Bureau have added their voices to the widespread condemnation of the devilish act.
According to a statement endorsed on Monday, November 6, 2023 by the Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of the Cameroon Bar Association, Barrister Dorcas Nkongwe captioned ” The Cameroon Bar Human Rights Commission strongly condemns the attack on the village of Egbekaw which left more than 20 people dead and more than 10 injured on November 6, 2023″ the commission learnt with dismay the sadness that occurred on the night of 6th November 2023, that at least 20 civilians were killed including women and children and about 10 others wounded by unknown armed men during an attack on the village of Egbekaw Manyu Division South West Region. The Commission, as per their statement, while expressing their sincere condolence to the bereaved family and a speedy recovery to those injured, condemns in strong terms such acts, which is a denial of the right to life enshrined in international human rights instruments to which the state of Cameroon has subscribed.
The Cameroon Bar Association Human Rights Commission however calls on the State of Cameroon to use all legal means to ensure that perpetrators, sponsors and instigators of the unacceptable acts are brought to justice and urges government authorities to act in accordance with their obligation under international human rights law.
SDF reiterates call for inclusive dialogue
According to the Social Democratic Front SDF through their South West Regional Bureau chair, Chief John Kona Makia in their statement captioned “The carnage in Egbekaw village in Mamfe, Manyu Division” dated Wednesday, November 8,2023 while condemning the barbaric act and extending their heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims who are mourning their loved ones in this difficult moment, called on the government to engage on a ceasefire on both parties in the crisis rocking the restive regions since 2016. The party urgently calls for a frank and inclusive dialogue so as to look for a lasting solution to the current crisis which has made the population vulnerable and called on government to take its responsibility to ensure the safety and security of Cameroonians.
