The principal of Government High School, GHS Buea Town has denied allegations that the Bee attack on students and teachers of her school disrupted the ongoing practical of the GCE exams. Contrary to social media claims, Madam Enanga Georgiana Sanga says the exams went on smoothly from start to finish.
According to reports and contrary to what many claimed was wrath of the gods on those who failed to respect the strike, it all began on this fateful day in the morning; students were in their various classrooms carrying on with their lectures and those of the examination classes with their practical exams. Lower sixth students were called upon by the discipline mistress of the
institution to go out for some manual labour and keep the school campus clean. In the course of the clean-up activity which is a weekly routine of the students, one of the lower sixth students by name Pauline disturbed a beehive with her machete which sent bees in the direction of the campus. The bees caused chaos on the school campus and students panicked and started running helter-skelter. Many of the students especially and the teachers were stung by the disturbed bees. Ten major cases of some students, who were stunk, were rushed to the Buea town health centre near the school campus. Nine of them received medications and retired to their homes while the remaining one student whose case was a little critical remained back receiving more treatment. But at the moment, all of the ten students are sound and perfectly okay.
The Sun Newspaper spoke to Madam Enanga Georgiana Sanga on the school campus seconds after the disturbance and she had this to say; “I thank The Sun Newspaper for such an opportunity to clear the air. In GHS Buea Town, we have a bush behind the school and we know that there are bees on a certain tree. Students were asked to keep the surroundings of the classrooms clean and one of them provoked the bees which later chased them into the school campus where other students were stung That is what caused the uproar we had on campus today. Those who were affected were mainly the lower sixth students and few other students. Those who were doing their exams were not in any way affected. The exams went on well and smoothly. As at now the environment is clean and serene and everything is back to normal”.
Fokah Seraphine, one of the victims of the bee attack said “We were in class when our discipline mistress took us out for manual labor which was a test. So we went behind the school to clear since there was grass. Unfortunately, a friend of ours disrupted the bee hive mistakenly. I just remembered when I was on the floor with bees all over my body and I was rushed here to the hospital. But right now I feel much better and relieved.”
According to Nanyongo Sally of Upper sixth arts and Ikome Njie Emilia of Form five, “The bees did not invade our school campus. We were present on campus when the incident happened. We were in class when suddenly we heard students running and screaming. A student had disturbed the beehive which was on one of the trees behind the classrooms. So we all left our classes and started heading to our respective homes but this did not disturb students doing their practical”.
