The long awaited road construction project from Ntoko Street, Hausa Quarters passing through Bethel Baptist Church to the railway station in Kumba II Sub Division, Meme Division, South West Region has been launched.
The launching ceremony was officiated by the Kumba City Mayor, Gregory Ntemeyok Mewamu last Wednesday, January 17, 2024. While launching the road construction project under the PDVIR World Bank project, the City Mayor, accompanied by Quarter Heads along the said stretch, Divisional Delegates and service heads of technical services of ministerial departments involved in road construction and contracting authorities, made a site tour of the area to educate the population concerned on the imminent demolition of structures within the mapped section of the road to be constructed and possible compensation of persons who genuinely acquired land in the area.
The City Mayor said the project will go a long way to boost the economy of Kumba II subdivision, improve the living condition of the population, with the employment of many youths in the area, improve the fight against insecurity and attract the construction of modern structures in the Sub Division.
The construction of the road will cost FCFA 5.5 billion and will be constructed by BUNS Road Construction Company.
The President of the Ntoko Youths Association, Nyambot Divine hailed the City Mayor for having chosen Ntoko Street as the commencement of the construction project. He said with the realisation of the project from Ntoko Street to the Railway station it will go long way to ease movement rather using the already congested road from Kumba Water around Town Green to the railway station usually being hampered by traffic hold up since it’s a national road linking Kumba to Mamfe and Tombel. Senior Councillor Chief Fonju Kennedy hinted that with the construction of the said road and the ongoing construction of the Endeley Street using pavement bricks, under the stewardship of the City Mayor, Gregory Ntemeyok Mewanu, Kumba is gradually regaining its real status as the economic hub of the South West Region.
He used the opportunity to express gratitude to the Head of State for keeping to his promise of transforming all Divisional Headquarters with modern roads.
It should be recalled that the FCFA 9 billion project was supposed to have started some 3 years ago but was delayed due to security challenges.
The project has finally been launched prompting the jubilation from the population. The project is programmed to be executed in two phases with the first phase engulfing of FCFA 5.5 billion.
