Municipal Councilors of the hygiene and sanitation committee of the Konye Council have decried the littering and abandonment of Corpses in their municipality that have an effect on their sources of drinking water.
The Councilors disclosed this observation on Thursday, April 18 during the council’s administrative, management and stores accounts session chaired by the 2nd Assistant Senior Divisional Officer, ASDO for Meme Division, Hermia Njonje at the Kumba City Council Hall.
According to the Secretary of the Hygiene and Sanitation Committee, George Ndima during the presentation of committee reports said it has come to their notice that lately their municipality is becoming a dumping ground for Corpses. This he noted will have an effect on their sources of drinking water and as well as transmit air borne diseases.
“Like I said in the committee report, it has come to our notice that Corpses are littered in some quarters and villages within our municipality. The recent one is the case of five Corpses that were discovered in Ikiliwindi village”, he noted.
The committee called on the government to do everything possible to ensure that their community is peaceful again.
Addressing the conclave, the Mayor of the Konye Council, Dr. Barrister George Musima Lobe disclosed that the sum of over FCFA 390 million was budgeted in 2018, and 48.87% of the budget was realized; meanwhile 29.52% was spent on investment.
Mayor Musima blamed the low realization on the current crisis. “The council’s revenue has since 2013 witnessed an increase until the socio-political crisis showed its ugly face”, the Mayor averred.
The Mayor noted that since 2016 peace has been threatened in his municipality, reasons why there is need for the reinstatement of security in the council area to ensure peace.
On her part, the 2nd ASDO for Meme Division said the 29.52% spent on investment is lower than the 40% prescribed by the law.
This she said is due to the ongoing socio-political crisis in the region and the prevailing insecurity.
Mayor Musima further regretted the fact that the present crisis has rendered almost all projects unrealized as only the construction of the Matonco II health center was fully realized, though the others were awarded but contractors could not go to the field due to insecurity.
