As a means to unite the population of Kumba ahead of the 45th edition of the National Day celebration in the country, the Senior Divisional Officer, SDO for Meme Division Chamberlain Ntou’ou Ndong on May 19 organized a March for Peace in Kumba, the headquarters of the division.
The Peace March which started as early as 7:00A.M saw a massive turnout of the population who marched from Les Brassaaries du Cameroun junction in Kumba III Sub-Division through Fiango to Hill top then BIECE junction and finally stopped at the Kumba City Council grandstand for aerobic exercises.
Mayors of the Kumba municipality, who belong to the SDF party, did not take part in the Peace March organized by Meme SDO.
This is following the decision of the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Front, SDF Ni John Fru Ndi calling on militants to boycott the National Day Celebration.
The boycott according to the circular letter is meant to remember those who have lost their lives and in communion with all those who are locked up unjustly due to the ongoing crisis.
This decision to boycott did not sit well with the Meme Boss. He said: “You can have confidence with the administration. I said it, if you are a Mayor you are suppose to participate like a Mayor and I hope that all of them will be with us on May 20, if not, I will show them.”
According to the representative of the Head of State in the Division, the Peace March was aimed at bringing the population together as one. It was also a means to call for peace and the massive turn out for the celebration that marks the unity of the country.
“I am very happy for the massive turnout that is why I am going to use this opportunity to congratulate the population of Meme Division who came out like one person to march for the unity of this country.” The SDO said
It should be noted that the SDF mayors however, showed up for the May 20 celebrations dressed in black.
