The Regional delegation of the Ministry of Finance for Southwest region recently organised the second edition of Insurance Awareness Open Day to boost the insurance sector in the region. Under the theme, “Protecting of the savings of life insurance and capitalization policy holders”, the event took place at the Limbe City Council hall in Down Beach, spearheaded by the Southwest Regional Delegate in charge of Insurance services, Lydia Efufa epse Jackai.
Chairing the event, the representative of Southwest Governor, Bernard Okalia Bilai, Inspector General at the governor’s office, Wousou Jacques said “The rate of insurance activities in the region is relatively low and very far from 50%. I note with satisfaction that one of the objectives of this gathering is to clean up and re-organise the operations of this sector”. Wousou observed that taking an insurance policy to protect one against any unforeseen risk in future is very important. He pointed out that taking an insurance policy against fire, a life insurance, automobile insurance, against industrial accidents or other damages was good for all to have.
On her part, the Southwest Regional Delegate in charge of Insurance services, Lydia Efufa epse Jackai said the main objective of the one-day workshop was to sensitise the public and bring together all the insurance sectors, subscribing of insurance policy to meet the ministry of finance and table their challenges.
She however decried that the ongoing crisis in the Southwest and Northwest regions is not friendly with the activities, although observing that the government is doing everything possible to ensure a flexible environment.
Limbe City Mayor, Paul Efome L.M Ngale congratulated the organiser of the event for the initiative to sensitise the public on the importance of insurance policy as well as the theme of this year’s edition which he said gives a clear stand of insurance policy.
The workshop was attended by representatives of about 15 insurance companies operating in the Southwest and beyond.
In an intervention, the Southwest manager of Prudential Beneficial Insurance, Dr Pius Enow, advised that an Insurance union be formed in the Southwest Region so as to enable them better check against those trying to infiltrate their ranks with illegal practices.
