The United Kingdom, UK of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has indicated its readiness to help Cameroon overcome its present humanitarian and security challenges. The availability of the British Government in supporting Cameroon to come out of the current humanitarian and security stalemate especially in the North West and South West regions was disclosed last April 24, 2019 at the Unity Palace in Yaounde by British High Commissioner to Cameroon, His Excellency Rowan James Laxton, after an audience granted him by the President of the Republic, Paul Biya.
In a chat with reporters at the end of the audience, British High Commissioner to Cameroon explained that “I said to the President that my Government was determined to support Cameroon to overcome its current difficulties, but also to make the most of the enormous potential of this wonderful country.”
The British Diplomat further explained that his in-camera discussion with President Paul Biya focused on the humanitarian and security situation in Cameroon including the situation in the north of the country, the Far North, North-West and South-West Regions in particular.
H.E. Rowan James Laxton after emphasizing that he had a very productive discussion with the Head of State said they discussed a large range of subjects such as bilateral, regional and international relations; particularly trade, investment, and development.
Britain is also noted to have given assistance to Cameroon to manage the influx of refugees from neighbouring Nigeria and the Central African Republic.
Other areas of fruitful cooperation between Cameroon and the UK include; the promotion of democracy, good governance, rule of law and wildlife protection. Education equally occupies an enviable position, considering that English Language is one of the official languages in Cameroon.
The institution of the Cameroon Women Scholarship and Chevening Scholarship schemes has greatly boosted bilateral ties between the two countries in the educational domain.
