Women of Limbe I Sub division in Fako, South West Region of Cameroon, were on March 8, 2025, cautioned against competing with men, in their quest to secure their rights and privileges. The alert was voiced by the divisional delegate of Women’s Empowerment and the Family for Fako, Barrister Mpey Nzo-Nguty, during her address to her peers at the event which was heavily attended at the Limbe Community field, under the auspices of Fako Senior Divisional Officer, Engelbert Viang Mekala.
In high colour, women from diverse backgrounds and leanings converged on the ceremonial ground to celebrate the 40th edition of the international women’s day in Cameroon, under the theme; For all Women and Girls: Rights, Equality and Empowerment.
In her opening address, the Mayor of Limbe I municipality, Mbwaye Eposi Florence said the occasion served as a platform to celebrate women who have excelled in their various fields. She emphasised on the values of love, respect and care, holding that every woman has to thrive in a world that recognises their rights and gender. Mayor Mbwaye nonetheless echoed challenges still faced by women across the globe, saying at least 2.7 billion women remain legally restricted from same job opportunities as men, and continue to face violence and discrimination. She revealed that at the level of her Council, efforts are being made to support women and girls, notably investment in education, where some 966 free birth certificates were done for school children and a host of mass marriages organised to empower women in their various homes.
On her part, the MINPROFF delegate for Fako, Mpey Nzo-Nguty said the day reminds women of the journey covered so far and what lies ahead. She said the commemoration provides women with tools to live their dreams and presses for fairer policies and practices that support women everywhere.
“Gender equality is very important for peace and development in every nation”, she said, saying the theme of the celebration speaks of a shared responsibility to create a world where no woman is left behind. “Gender equality is a human, not woman issue…It’s about breaking barriers and ensuring their rights are enjoyed in full.”
The delegate cautioned women against excesses, calling on them to act responsibly, reminding that they are out to compliment and not compete with men. She also used the occasion to celebrate men for their support towards women.
In his keynote address, Fako SDO, Engelbert Viang Mekala said women deserve respect from the state, community and family. He observed that investing in women is highly beneficial to the entire society. While regretting challenges which still plague women in Cameroon, notably out-of-school girls, early marriages, violence and rape, Viang challenged the entire society to work for the improvement of women’s cause. He also called on women to make use of the systems put in place by the state to secure their rights, as he announced zero-tolerance in Fako Division for any form of mistreatment of women. “I will not grant any form of violence or mistreatment of women…you can count on me”, he assured.
The event was spiced by displays of songs and dance, a colourful march pass, award of prizes and visit to exhibition stands.
