Ekona: Fatal road accident claims several lives

A fatal road accident which occurred on Wednesday, July 9 along the Ekona stretch of road (Buea – Kumba highway) reportedly claimed at least nine lives. The incident is said to have occurred when a heavy-duty vehicle collided with a inter- urban transport bus, transporting 10 persons. Reports say nine of the individuals on the bus died on the spot, while one other was in critical condition and rushed to the Regional Annex Hospital in Buea for medical attention. At press time, his medical state was not certain, as the remains of the nine deceased were transported to the mortuary pending burial arrangements.

The sad incident, with the exact cause still under investigation, again highlights the need for good roads, good state of vehicles and moderate speed on the roads.

Mundemba pirates attack leaves at least seven dead

At least seven persons have died following a pirates attack on the waters around Mundemba, Ndian Division, South West Region of Cameroon. The incident reportedly occurred on the night of Wednesday, July 2, when a boat transporting local business persons from a business trip from Nigeria was attacked by pirates. The SUN gathered that a first set of the victims was kidnapped and transported to a forest hideout, and as the attackers tried transporting the last set, they were met with a heavy intervention from the Rapid Intervention Battalion BIR elements. The cross fire exchange led to the death of four of the business persons (two male and two female) and reportedly three of the pirates.

The SUN also gathered that some of the business persons earlier kidnapped, successfully arrived Mundemba in the morning of Thursday, July 3, while some others were still missing at press time. The remains of the two women reports say have been deposited at the mortuary of the Regional Hospital in Limbe.
