Following its national council meeting which held on Saturday, September 6, in Yaoundé, the Cameroon Renaissance Movement party, better known by its French acronym MRC, has announced the possible backing of one of the opposition candidates in the October 12 presidential election. According to a statement released by the party’s Acting National President, Mamadou Mota, two important resolutions came out of the meeting; firstly, the party “will support a candidate coming from a coalition of at least two major parties for the next presidential election”. Also, the statement tells that all the militants of MRC have expressed support for the return of their National President, Maurice Kamto, to the party. Recall, Kamto had secured shelter under opposition party Manidem, to table his bid for the 2025 presidential election which unfortunately for him did not sail through.
As at now, it remains unclear which candidate the MRC will actually back in the days ahead, considering it cannot be easily figured out which of the talked about coalitions has bought its interest or has a number of major opposition parties involved.
The MRC also resolved during the meeting to participate in next year’s municipal and legislative elections. The party, which boycotted the 2020 twin elections must have certainly learnt the hard way, seeing that by so doing, it easily disqualified itself from the 2025 presidential election, a much anticipated moment during which it was expected to produce fireworks and change the political atmosphere of the country.
