Kumba I Council wins Meme Clean City Contest

The results for the divisional clean city contest in Meme Division; South West Region has been made public with Kumba I Council having an outstanding position as compared to the other Councils in the Division.

According to the results and statistics published by the 3rd Assistant Senior Divisional Officer ASDO, Manekeu Ndoping Nadege Carole on behalf of the SDO, Ntou’ou Ndong Chamberlin in Prefectoral order N0.G39/020 of 16 April 2026, which THE SUN procured a copy, read: “The Divisional Clean City Contest that was launched on the 2nd of April 2026 in Meme by the Senior Divisional Officer for Meme at the Kumba I Council municipality came to an end on Tuesday the 14th of April 2026.”

The Communiqué announcing the results further states that,  the members of the jury sat on Tuesday, the 14th of April 2026 in accordance to the terms of reference of the clean city contest after field evaluation of the work done by the various Sub Divisional Councils, the results are as follows: Kumba I Council came in the first position, scoring 19/20, Kumba II Council came 2nd with a score of 15.5/20, Kumba III came 3rd with a score of 13.5/20 while Konye and Mbonge came in the 4th and 5th scoring 13/20 and 12/20  respectively.

Kumba I Council eyes South West best clean city contest

Following the results of the Meme Clean City Contest with Kumba I Council lifting the trophy at the Divisional level and thus to contest at the South West Regional level, the Council under the leadership of Mayor Kwo Barrister Eseme Moses Esembe, is having sleepless nights and mapping out strategises on how to emerge overall best in the Region and to represent the region at the National Clean City Contest later this year. To match words with actions and to better contest, the Council has launched the 1st edition of Kumba I Council Clean Neighbourhood Contest.

Clean neighbourhood contest kits distributed to 19 Kumba I Council communities

The Clean Neighbourhood Contest themed, “Clean Neighbourhood, Our Shared Responsibility”, was launched recently, aimed at promoting hygiene and sanitation within the municipality, foster a competitive spirit amongs neighbourhood in maintaining their environment and reward winners.

Addressing the leaders of the 19 neighbourhoods, including commercial bikers, and civil society organistations within the Kumba I municipality that will actively contest, the Mayor emphasised on the need to control uncleanliness and involve residents in hygiene and sanitation operations. The contest, the Mayor indicated, equally aims to promote a sense of ownership and responsibility among residents.

The Mayor announced that at the end of the contest, the council will award prizes to the outstanding neighbourhoods to enable them do better in subsequent competitions. For the prizes, the first neighbourhood will back home FCFA 500,000 including sanitation kits, the 2nd will back home FCFA 300,000 and sanitation kits, while the 3rd and 4th, will carry a cash prize of  FCFA 150,000  and FCFA 100.000 and sanitation kits respectively. Individual prizes including prize for the cleanest commercial bike rider, the most supportive quarter head, hospitals, basic education institutions, restaurants and off-liciense with the best practices for hygiene and sanitation, the Mayor hinted, are not left out.

To enable each of the neighbourhoods enter the competition with clear strategy and accountability, the competitors were drilled on community mobilisation, sanitation planning, filing, record-keeping and reporting. At the end of the training, the Council handed over kits such as spades, wheelbarrows, rakes, and safety gloves to all the participating neighbourhoods.

The jury to supervise the Kumba I Council Clean City Contest, include delegates from health sector and civil society organisations with a specific term of reference to evaluate the neighbourhood on criteria such as management and waste control.
