In the heart of Limbe, Cameroon, a group of dedicated individuals has been working tirelessly to promote the conservation and education of the Limbe Botanic Garden. The Friends of the Limbe Botanic Garden (FoG), established in the early 1990s, is a local support organisation with mission to enhance and promote the conservation of the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Limbe Botanic Garden for education, recreation, and inspiration of the present and future generations.
With a membership of about 80 individuals, both home and abroad, FoG has been instrumental in organising activities and events that bring the community together. From guided tours to educational programmes, FoG has been a driving force in showcasing the garden’s unique features and promoting sustainable tourism.

The garden itself is a treasure trove of biodiversity, with over 500 species of plants, including some of the rarest and most endangered species in the world. The garden is also home to a variety of animals, including monkeys, birds, and reptiles. The garden’s scenic beauty, with its winding paths and picturesque landscapes, makes it a popular destination for nature lovers and tourists.
Recently, FoG organised a visit to the garden, which attracted a diverse group of participants, including students, educators, and nature enthusiasts. The tour was led by Mr. Christopher Fominyam, a passionate tour guide and biodiversity conservationist, who shared his knowledge and insights about the garden’s history, flora, and fauna.

Dr Victor Mbome Njie, Chairman of FoG, was thrilled with the turnout and expressed his gratitude to the participants. “I want to first of all appreciate you for being patient and tolerant with us, for being part of the exercise,” he said in an interview after the tour. “I think you can judge that usually it starts timidly and then we gather a lot of momentum, and I think it’s been particularly successful because we had a chance to listen to people who are having the experience of a guided tour for the first time.”
The participants were impressed by the garden’s beauty and diversity, and many expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to learn about the garden’s history and significance. The Principal of Saker Baptist College Limbe, Motutu Hannah who participated in the tour, said, “It has been very interesting and very educative for me to visit the Limbe Botanic Garden. I have learned a lot… I think when you are here, you will appreciate nature and you will learn a lot.”
The success of the tour has sparked interest among stakeholders, and FoG is eager to welcome more participants and supporters. Dr. Mbome Njie emphasised the importance of collaboration and invited stakeholders to join FoG in its mission to promote the garden’s conservation. “We need more stakeholders to come and understand and see the value, the potential in this place,” he said. “The potential in the Limbe Botanic Garden is enormous, and I want to open up for any stakeholders to join us on board.”
As FoG looks to the future, it is clear that the organisation is committed to continuing its work in promoting the conservation and education of the Limbe Botanic Garden. With its dedicated members and supporters, FoG is well-positioned to make a positive impact on the community and the environment.
