The governor of the West Region warns against motorcycle thefts near the AFCON fan zones

The governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka Augustine, has alerted residents following several cases of motorcycle theft in Bafoussam, particularly around some fan zones set up for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The competition has been taking place in Morocco since December 21, 2025, and Cameroon is participating.

In a statement signed on January 7, 2026, the administrative authority indicated that these thefts were observed on the night of Sunday, January 4, 2026. The phenomenon is said to have coincided with an influx of supporters of the Indomitable Lions gathered to follow the round of 16 match against Bafana Bafana of South Africa, won by Cameroon (2-1), which meant qualification for the next stage of the tournament.

Ahead of the quarter-final match between Cameroon and host country Morocco this Friday, January 9, the governor “is calling on motorcycle owners to be extra vigilant and to pay particular attention to securing their vehicles ,” especially during large public gatherings. He is also asking “those in charge of the various fan zones to ensure increased security at their parking areas” in order to reduce risks.

While condemning these acts, Awa Fonka Augustine urges victims to contact the territorially competent police or gendarmerie units to allow for investigations and the identification of the perpetrators. He also calls on the public to remain vigilant during periods of public celebration and to systematically report any thefts or other reprehensible acts to the appropriate authorities, in order to protect the safety of people and property amidst the intense mobilization surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations.
