COVID-19 scare pushes ELECAM to hold session as of right via video conference

The second session as of right of the Electoral Board of Elections Cameroon, ELECAM of the leg-islative partial rerun of last March 22, 2020 in 10 constituencies in the North West region and 1 constituency in the South West region took place last March 27, 2020, with only three persons in the Conference room of ELECAM in Yaounde, with the rest of the Electoral Board members participat-ing live at home or in their respective offices through tablets, laptops, phones, computers etc.

In the hall, the President of the Electoral Board, Enow Abrams Egbe was chairing the video confer-ence session thanks to a large screen on the wall of the conference hall in the presence of two other persons; the Director General of Elections, Erik Essousse and the Deputy Director General of Elec-tions, Abdoulkarimou.
In a chat with the state media, Enow Abrams Egbe said everything went on well as if all the Elec-toral Board members were seated in the same hall.
He explained that the video conference is in respect of government’s measures geared towards pri-oritising digital contacts over physical ones in order to limit the spread of Coronavirus in the coun-try.
The video conference controlled by youths of the computer service of ELECAM enabled members to listen the report of the partial legislative election in the two English Speaking regions.
While stating that the partial polls went on hitch free, Enow Abrams Egbe congratulated the Direc-tor General of Elections and his team for the smooth organisation of the election at a very short time interval from the general twin polls.
The President of the Electoral Board expressed gratitude to all the stakeholders for making it possi-ble for the partial rerun to take place in a peaceful atmosphere.
Inviting candidates to calmly wait for the official proclamation of the results as stipulated by the Electoral Code, he concluded that all elections are experiences by ELECAM to perfect the electoral process in order to consolidate Cameroon’s democracy.
