The Chief of Molyko village in Buea Sub-division, His Royal Majesty Esuka Mathias Etonge, has once again proven that leadership and learning are two sides of the same coin. The traditional ruler, known for his humility and community service, has recorded another academic milestone after emerging as the Best Top-up Master of Science (M.Sc) graduate in Banking and Finance at the Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB).

He achieved this impressive feat with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.89, distinguishing himself among his peers and setting a shining example of determination, discipline, and intellectual pursuit.
The academic honour was conferred on him on Friday, November 7, 2025, during BUIB’s grand 2025 Graduation Ceremony, which celebrated over one thousand graduates who had excelled in diverse fields of study. The occasion was filled with pomp, colour, and pride as the Chief of Molyko was recognised for his outstanding performance and perseverance.
A crown of brains and leadership
For many, balancing royal responsibilities, family commitments, and academic work might seem impossible. Yet, for Chief Esuka, the journey has been one of passion, resilience, and focus.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with The SUN, the Chief expressed that merging his duties as a traditional ruler with academic life was a challenge that required deliberate discipline and divine guidance. “It wasn’t an easy task merging academics with chieftaincy matters as well as family responsibilities,” he admitted. “Nonetheless, with hard work, setting the right priorities, and determination, I emerged successfully in flying colours.”

The traditional ruler, who already holds an HND, a B.Tech, and an MBA in Banking and Finance, described his latest M.Sc degree as a dream fulfilled and a call to greater service both to his people and to society at large.
A journey of grit and perseverance
Reflecting on his academic journey, Chief Esuka revealed that the experience at Biaka University Institute was nothing short of transformative. “From the very first day to the last, I’ve had a tremendous experience,” he recounted with pride. “We’ve shared good memories with the teachers, the students, and the staff. They have all been instrumental in helping me achieve this milestone.”
Despite joining the programme later than most of his classmates, the Chief said he made up for the lost time through diligence and extra effort. “One of the major challenges I faced was that I started school very late. To overcome it, I had to work extremely hard by taking all the notes, reading them repeatedly, and catching up with other students,” he explained. “I must confess, the teachers were very supportive, and my classmates were equally helpful.”
Balancing royalty and academia
Asked how he managed to juggle his time between the palace and the classroom, the Chief smiled knowingly and offered a piece of advice that could easily pass for a life mantra. “It’s about programming,” he said. “When it’s time for books, it’s time for books. When it’s time for work, it’s time for work. You just need to plan and stick to your priorities.”
According to him, his journey was made easier by the strong support of his family, classmates, and lecturers, who constantly encouraged him to stay focused despite his busy schedule. “It took my wife, my family, and my classmates’ support to reach this level. Sometimes when I missed a class, they would call to remind me. That kind of teamwork really motivated me,” he added.
Applying knowledge to community leadership
Beyond personal achievement, HRM Esuka believes that education is a tool for transformation not just for individuals but for entire communities. He intends to apply the knowledge and leadership skills gained during his studies to improve governance within his community. “As a traditional ruler, I’ll apply the knowledge gained here in the way I handle my people and the situations that arise. The skills I’ve acquired especially in human resource management and finance will help me manage my people in a God-fearing and scientific way,” he stated.
This, he believes, is the true essence of education: using knowledge to uplift others and foster sustainable development.
Eyes on the next frontier: The PhD dream
Chief Esuka is not resting on his laurels. In addition to his recent success, he is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. programme at Calabar University in Nigeria, which he intends to focus on fully now that his Master’s degree is completed. “I was doing two programmes at once; this M.Sc and my Ph.D. Now that this one is finished, I’ll concentrate on my Ph.D.”, he disclosed.
His commitment to lifelong learning, he says, is driven by the belief that knowledge is a crown no one can take away.
A message to the next generation
To younger students and professionals who look up to him, the Chief’s message is one of perseverance and focus. “To those behind me, they should not give up. They should take one step at a time and concentrate on their studies. Biaka University has the best lecturers and a conducive environment. If they stay disciplined and shun social ills, success will surely come,” he advised.
He also extended heartfelt gratitude to Dr. (Mrs.) Francisca Biaka, founder of BUIB, for her visionary leadership and dedication to academic excellence. “I want to thank Dr. (Mrs.) Francisca Biaka for making the environment conducive and hiring the best lecturers. She has made this journey smooth for many of us,” he said.
A model of modern royalty
With his new academic honour, HRM Esuka Mathias Etonge stands as a shining symbol of what modern traditional leadership represents, one that blends culture with intellect, tradition with progress, and humility with achievement.
His story is a reminder that true leadership begins with self-development and that with focus and faith, even a royal crown can sit comfortably beside a graduation cap.
