Meme Councils celebrate African Day of Decentralisation in pomp

Councils in Meme Division, South West Region of Cameroon, joined other councils all over the national territory to celebrate the 14th edition of African Day of Decentralisation, last August 12, 2025. The celebration which took place at the Kumba City Council hall was in pomp, as the various councils showcased their know-how in the domain of decentralisation. The event that brought together particpants from the six councils in Meme Division was chaired by the Senior Divisional Officer, Chamberlain Ntou’ou Ndong.

Celebrated under the theme, “Building resilient communities through inclusive decentralisation and equitable development”, the Divisional Delegate of Decentralisation and Local Development MINDDEVEL, for Meme, Elangwe Venus, called on all to put hands on deck to ensure effective and equitable development.

The ceremony was characterised with exhibitions by the councils, issuance of birth certificates and award of prizes to winners of weeklong competitions.

Kumba I Council, in Meme Division, South West Region, had an exhibition stand during the celebration of Decentralisation Day, showcasing the council’s services and products. It was a fantastic opportunity for the Council to highlight her  achievements and share its vision with the community. At their stand, the Council displayed a range of services and products that demonstrate their commitment to development and community empowerment. From local produce to innovative initiatives, the Council  showcased its pride and know-how with visitors.

As part of activities marking the 14th African Decentralisation and Local Development Day and the 8th African Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Day – 2025, Kumba City Council proudly joined sister councils across Meme Division for a massive Sport Walk.

It should be recalled that the African Day of Decentralisation is celebrated on August 10 each year. It highlights the importance of decentralization in promoting good governance, local development, and citizen participation across the continent.

Key aspects of the African Day of Decentralisation include; encouraging local governments to take charge of their own development and decision-making processes, promoting transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in local administrations, involving citizens in governance to ensure their voices are heard and their needs met, fostering economic and social development at the local level to improve the quality of life for citizens.

The day serves as a platform for discussions, initiatives, and policy reforms aimed at strengthening decentralised governance in Africa.
