The constant disruptions in optic fiber connection in Cameroon, which often leads to internet disruption as was witnessed on 3 October 2018, is said to be caused by rehabilitation works being carried out on roads.
In an official statement issued on October 3, the regulator ART denounced “multiple cuts in optical fiber”, which are “the main cause of the deterioration in the quality of service” in the telecoms sector in the country.
This situation is all the more alarming because, according to the institution, there is an “average of about thirty cuts in optical fiber per month” across the country.
The incumbent operator Camtel charged with the management of the fiber optic infrastructure, said that these multiple interruptions “are caused by the road infrastructure rehabilitation works” currently underway in Cameroon.
“Giving the importance of the optical fiber transmission network, ART asked Camtel to ensure a better coverage by taking into account redundancy needs to guarantee the necessary quality of service,” said ART’s MD Philémon Zo’o Zame
