Two Nigerians who engaged in the transportation of Chloroquine tablets to make fast cash in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, were on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 arrested at Bota Wharf Limbe. They were arrested by the Cameroonian Navy at the high sea with over 128,000 fake Chloroquine tablets.
According to Colonel Sone Clement, the Cameroonian Navy intercepted the two fake Chloroquine agents during their daily routine patrol at the high sea, thanks to intelligence.
“Since the government took measures to fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the Navy has been doing a lot to make sure that maritime boundaries are closed and only legal Merchandise are allowed to come in but we realised there’s still a lot of illegal activities at the sea”, Colonel Sone Clement explained.
Speaking to the press at the scene, the Director of the Limbe Regional Hospital, Dr. Kinge Thompson Njie said, “Just from the packaging, one can tell that these are fake Chloroquine tablets.”
He added that all these activities are related to news going around that Chloroquine can treat COVID-19 infection. The Director emphasised that Chloroquine cannot treat or prevent the COVID-19.
The Divisional Officer for Limbe I, Acha Gilbert Nkwenti, urged the populace to rush to the Limbe Regional Hospital Mile I, in case of any signs and symptoms.
“At our level there’s no new measure put in place to fight against the virus, we all know the government has put in place 13 measures to check the spread of the virus, so we’re on our feet to make sure that the population of Limbe I Subdivision apply those rules”, Acha Gilbert said.
He called on the population to continue to collaborate with the administration to prevent the spread of the deadly pandemic in Limbe I Subdivision and beyond.
