Anglophone crisis: Tension mounts after military operation in Jakiri

By NEB

A tense atmosphere has resurfaced in Cameroon’s North West region, following a recent military operation in Ndzerem-Nyam, a locality in Jakiri Subdivision, Bui Division, North West.

According to a statement issued by Head of Military Communication, Atonfack Guemo Cyrille Serge, the operation which was carried out in the early hours of Sunday, April 2026, was aimed “to neutralise dangerous terrorists of diverse factions united under the command of self-styled ‘General Capo'”, whom the military maintained were preparing violent attacks to be executed in the region.

The military notes that at least 14 “terrorists” were neutralised in the raid, (11 male and 3 female). The communiqué, issued last April 30 further lists various arms, accessories and explosive devices recovered from the operation, including 38 motorcycles.

The military says it remains determined to intensify its operations, though local sources and some reports claim civilians were caught in the crossfire.

The recent operation is in line with the ongoing armed conflict in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon, which broke out following a teachers and lawyers strike in the two English-speaking regions which started in late 2016. For close to a decade, clashes between State defence forces and separatist fighters clamouring for an independent state called “Ambazonia” have ensued, claiming thousands of lives and ushering a toll of suffering and hardship on the population in the two regions.
