Suspense on when will students of the universities of Buea, Bamenda, Dschang and Douala will finally receive President Paul Biya’s free laptops will be broken as from this February 13, 2018 following the resumption of the distribution exercise to other state universities.
The revelation was made at the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport last weekend by Higher Education Minister and Chancellor of Academic Orders, Prof Jacques Fame Ndongo in the presence of Communication Minister and Government Spokesman, Issa Tchiroma Bakary following the arrival of 50 000 PB HEV laptops last February 9 and 50 000 others last February 11, 2018 making a total of 100, 000 laptops within the space of three days.
Minister Fame Ndongo will chair the handing over event in Douala 10am and Buea 2pm on February 14, and in Dschang at 10am and Bamenda at 2pm on February 16, 2018
The laptops were flown in via Ethiopian cargo Aircraft.
In a chat with reporters at the airport, Minister Jacques Fame Ndongo said “Last December 2017 as you know, we received the first contingent of 80,000 laptops which we distributed to students of the universities of Yaounde I and Yaounde II, Soa. Today we are receiving the second contingent of 50 000 plus 50 000 making a total of 100 000 laptops.”
The Higher Education Minister further revealed that with 180, 000 already received, the remaining 320 000 laptops will be brought in by ship in the months ahead and distributed latest June 2018 to the remaining two state universities; Maroua and Ngaoundere as well as all private higher institutions of learning in the country as promised.
Talking to reporters at the airport, the Minister of Communication and Government Spokesman, Issa Tchiroma Bakary said “without knowledge it is difficult to run a country, thus having this in mind, the President of the Republic, H.E Paul Biya decided to equip future managers and leaders of our country with these computers.”
Addressing those who have been painting black the presidential gesture, Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary said “they must understand that these tools put at the disposal of our children will enable them to be good leaders of tomorrow in a world dominated by a digital economy and ICTs.”
