As of December 30, the final electoral lists for 2024 became available. After the registration process initiated by the elections body Elections Cameroon, the registration stood at 7.3 million individuals who were registered at the time last year; thus, way forward, this number rose to 7.8 million. This has been deemed an improvement, though it is underwhelming to those who criticize the current leadership for not achieving the 8 million registration mark.
A few months ago, MP Cabral Libii, who is also the national president of the Cameroon Party for National Reconciliation (PCRN), one of the leading opposition parties, encouraged Cameroonians to massively register so that they could hit the 11 million mark. Especially since, in 2025, the registration will be shortened by half due to the presidential polls.
Like Cabral Libii, the main opponents of Paul Biya, the Cameroonian president, are convinced that if the size of the electoral lists increases considerably, it is certain that the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (RDPC), the ruling party, will be put in difficulty at the polls. A bet that is far from being won, as evidenced by the figures published by Elecam on December 30. And this, despite the great mobilization of the opposition.
None of the main opposition leaders have yet spoken out to comment on the figure communicated by Elecam on December 30, as required by the Electoral Code. Indeed, Article 80 of this law provides that “at the end of the revision operations, and in view of the documents and data communicated by the regional branches of Elections Cameroon, the Director General of Elections shall establish and make public the national electoral list no later than December 30. ”
