Separatist leaders in court today amidst alleged gendarmerie brutality on one of their defence lawyers

The military court in Yaounde will this Monday July 29, 2019 resume the hearing of what is now known as the “Ambazonian Leaders” case in suit No OMJD No. 669 of 29/ 11/ 2018: The State of Cameroon Vs Sissiku Ayuk Tabe Julius & 9 others. The matter pending before the Yaounde Military Court, it should be noted has suffered several adjournments and the last time the matter was expected to come up, was Tuesday July 23, 2019, but it was rather adjourned at the eleventh hour by the President of the said court, Magistrate Mise Njone Jacques through a “scheduling notice” at the notice board of the court, indicating that the matter has been rescheduled to today Monday, July 29, 2019 due to the unavailability of the detained persons.
However, as the members of the Ambazonian leaders’ defence team led by Barrister Paddy Yong are getting ready to enter appearance in court, one of the members of the team is reported to have been brutalised by two alleged gendarmerie officers at the Biyem-assi neighbourhood in the nation’s political capital Yaounde, on Saturday, July 27, 2019.

Barrister Amungwa Nicodemus Tanyi, Head of Communication of the Ambazonian Defence Team, saw himself seriously molested around the Amour Mezam Travelling Agency.
According to reports, he was trekking back home from their Biyem- assi office when suddenly, two alleged gendarmerie officers on a commercial Motorcycle pushed his back and almost knocked him and won’t allow him to complain, saying they are gendarmerie officers.
Eye witness account narrates that they ruffled and molested him with the use of a gun around his waist, as one kept on cramming his neck around the park and immediately called their colleagues to come with a van to whisk him to their station.
The legal luminary’s situation, reports say deteriorated and he was immediately rushed to the Biyem- assi District hospital.
This situation has received condemnation from Lawyers across the board. A former President of the Cameroon Bar Council is of the opinion that all Anglophone lawyers must take this as a collective attack against lawyers and that members of the Fako Lawyers Association, FAKLA, Meme Lawyers Association, MELA, Mamfe Lawyers Association, MALA and North West Lawyers Association, NOWELA, should summon extraordinary meetings to discuss and brainstorm on the issue for a collective reaction.
At press time, family sources hinted that Barrister Amungwa Nicodemus Tanyi is expected to go for serious medical attention at the CHU Yaounde.
